CHESTERFIELD 0 OLDHAM 1
Chesterfield's relegation worries increased when they were 1-0 beaten at home by an Oldham side who boosted their chances of Second Division survival. The match was decided by a 38th-minute close-range header from Neil Adams, who was left unmarked to put away a John Sheridan free-kick. That error proved costly as Chesterfield failed to convert possession into chances, and at the end a group of angry fans called for the sacking of manager John Duncan. But the commitment of his team could not be faulted even though goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between. Jon Howard did rattle the crossbar, however, a minute before the break. But Oldham had the clearer chances and Mark Gayle twice made excellent saves from Craig Dudley while Mark Allott should have scored with a close-range header in the 41st minute.

Adams' strike earns points
A Neil Adams header from a John Sheridan free kick in the 38th minute gave the Latics a much needed 1-0 victory at Chesterfield. The game was played in front of 2,737 spectators in blustery conditions with Oldham desperate for the victory to pull them away from the Division Two danger zone at the foot of the table. However, it was the home side who opened brightly with a header early on from Ian Breckin. The 24-year-old was always doubtful going into the clash and it soon became apparent that the versatile defender was not going to last the pace. Steve Wilkinson replaced Breckin after just six minutes of the contest which forced Jason Lee to fall back into defence. The Spireites also went close through a John Howard effort whose shot rattled off the Oldham crossbar. However, Andy Ritchie's men absorbed the early pressure and soon took the ascendancy. And in the 38th minute, Neil Adam's put the Latics into the lead. The returning Jason Lee fouled Craig Dudley just outside his own penalty area. This led to the veteran former Leeds star, John Sheridan who flighted a free kick into the box. Adams met the ball perfectly and his powerful header gave Mark Gayle no chance in the Chesterfield goal. Craig Dudley nearly extended Oldham's lead before the interval, but his shot was met by a superb reaction save by Gayle. Oldham were certainly buoyed by the positive nature of their play approaching the half-time break. And Andy Ritchie's men started the second half the stronger of the two teams. However, the home side did enjoy their fair share of chances. Marcus Ebdon went close after the ball had landed at his feet from a crowded penalty area, but his effort went wide. And the home side were hopeful of a penalty when John Howard appeared to be brought down in the area by Latics' keeper Gary Kelly, but the penalty appeal was ignored by the referee. The Latics also went close with a Lee Duxbury header which flashed over the bar from a Paul Rickers cross, as well as a powerful shot by Neil Adams which was deflected clear. Chesterfield's play became more desperate as full time approached with frustration creeping into their game. And they nearly equalised when in the dying seconds, John Howard's shot was deflected clear after Jason Lee, who was back in attack, appeared to be held back. The victory is sure to be a massive boost for Andy Ritchie's side who now find themselves in a little more respectable 16th place in Division Two.

Garnett boost for Ritchie

Shaun Garnett is set to defy the medics and return to training earlier than expected after shaking off a niggling injury. The big defender, who is 30 this month, said: "The specialist told me I could be out for five weeks but I am looking to get back to full fitness long before then." The early return of the influential player is sure to come as a welcome fillip for Latics' chief Andy Ritchie, who will no doubt be aiming to build on the hard fought victory at fellow strugglers Chesterfield on Saturday.
