Latics
anguish at last-gasp winner
Paul
Shaw slammed home a dramatic last-minute penalty to give Millwall a 1-0
over the Latics, in a game where each side had a man sent off. The game
erupted into action on 29 minutes when Millwall top scorer Neil Harris
was sent off for violent conduct after having his shirt tugged by Mark
Hotte. Harris had earlier been denied by Gary Kelly, the Oldham keeper
pulling off a superb save to keep his side on level terms in the third
minute. Oldham appeared to be in the ascendancy, on numerical terms at
least but this was blown apart just six minutes later when forward Matthew
Tipton received his marching orders, again for violent conduct, after retaliating
against home defender Robbie Ryan, who had earlier felled Tipton with a
rash tackle. Chances were few and far between in this ill-tempered clash,
and in the second half, Millwall looked the more likely of the teams to
open the scoring. But Latics 'keeper Gary Kelly had other ideas, as he
produced good saves from Lucas Neill and Paul Ifill to keep the scoresheet
blank. But he could do nothing to keep out Shaw's last-gasp spot kick,
awarded when Hotte brought ex-Arsenal man down in the box. Shaw then kept
his cool to slot home the resulting spot-kick to send the Millwall fans
into wild excitement, as they closed the gap at the top of the Second Division,
with Preston and Bristol Rovers both dropping points.
Oldham did
their slim play-off hopes no favours as they slipped further adrift of
the top six.
Both
managers criticise referee
Referee
Tony Harris came under criticism from Millwall boss Keith Stevens after
a game of six bookings and two red cards. Millwall's leading scorer Neil
Harris, returning after three games out through injury, was shown the red
card after reacting to Oldham defender Mark Hotte's shirt-pulling.
Within six
minutes, Latics striker Matthew Tipton was sent off by the ref for retaliation,
after a crunching tackle from Lions' full-back Robbie Ryan.
Stevens said
of the official: "I don't think it was his best day at the office. But
hopefully he'll come and have a drink and I'll be able to discuss some
of those decisions with him." Oldham's manager Andy Ritchie was understandably
less calm after watching his side denied a point by a last-gasp penalty
from Paul Shaw. Bitterly disappointed to have lost out so late in the game,
Ritchie was also fuming with Tony Harris' dismissal of his player: "Don't
ask me about the referee. If we are going to work within the letter of
the law Ryan should have also gone." Despite the controversy, Lions boss
Stevens was quick to praise his side's efforts: "If it had ended 0-0, there
was certainly not much more the lads could have done. I can't ask for any
more effort; as long as my players give that amount, I'll be able to pat
them on the back and say well done."
ESPN
Soccernet Millwall
sub Paul Shaw thumped home a dramatic 90th minute penalty winner to snatch
three vital points against a resilient Oldham. Both sides lost their centre
forwards, sent off for serious foul play within six minutes of one another
during a hostile first half. Millwall leading scorer Harris was the first
to go on 29 minutes, referee Tony Bates showing him the red card after
he had retaliated to Mark Hotte's shirt tugging. Then on 35 the teams were
again level in numbers after Oldham's Matthew Tipton saw red, again for
retaliation, this time against home defender Robbie Ryan after strong tackle.
Millwall had earlier forced the pace with visiting keeper Gary Kelly producing
a stunning third minute save from Harris. With Oldham's attacks a rarity
Kelly continued to keep the score blank with fine second half saves from
the workmanlike Lucas Neill and winger Paul Ifill.

Life Weekend review
PRESTON STUMBLE
TO TOP
Preston moved to
the top of the Second Division on goal difference despite being held to
a 2-2 draw with struggling Reading at Deepdale.
Nicky Forster
put the visitors ahead after 39 minutes before Jon Macken, with his 18th
league goal, and Michael Jackson seemed to have put North End in control
just after the restart.
But Martin Butler,
a £750,000 signing in the week from Cambridge, enjoyed a great start
with his new club to grab a vital leveller for the struggling Royals.
Burnley had leading
scorer Andy Payton sent off for violent conduct early on against leaders
Bristol Rovers in the crunch promotion clash at Turf Moor but took the
points courtesy of a Glen Little wonder goal in the 69th minute goal.
Wigan remain
unbeaten away from home after a draw at bottom-of-the-table Cambridge but
after Stuart Barlow's 20th goal of the season Tom Youngs levelled in injury
time for the Us.
Millwall had
leading scorer Neil Harris sent off for violent conduct and it became 10
a side when Oldham's Matthew Tipton was dismissed for serious foul play.
But the Lions
took the points courtesy of Paul Shaw's last-gasp penalty.
Three men who
missed the thrill of the cup last week were on the score sheet as Gillingham
rocked Stoke 3-0 at Priestfield.
New signings
Iffy Onuora and Ty Gooden notched in the opening half and Rodney Rowe's
73rd-minute strike gave the Gills a comfortable win.
Oxford's troubles
continued after John Murphy's 18th-minute goal gave fellow strugglers Blackpool
a 1-0 success at the Manor Ground.
Bristol City
managed to win for only the fourth time at home as they saw off lowly Chesterfield
through goals from Tony Thorpe, Scott Murray and Peter Beadle.
Brentford had
skipper Paul Evans sent off for a second bookable offence and slumped to
a 2-0 home defeat to Notts County.
Francis Tierney
put County ahead after 11 minutes and Kevin Rapley sealed the points with
a 70th-minute strike.
Colchester slumped
to a 3-1 home defeat to Bury despite going in front through Karl Duguid
after 16 minutes. Danny Swales levelled before the break and second-half
goals from Lutel James and Paul Barnes gave the Shakers the points.
Luton lost at
home for only the second time as Bournemouth pulled off a 2-1 win.
A 34th-minute
Scott Mea strike and Julian Watts own goal gave the Cherries a two-goal
lead before Emmerson Boyce pulled one back for the Hatters after 58 minutes.
Wrexham found
Wycombe too hot to handle at the Racecourse Ground.
The Welshmen
led through Craig Faulconbridge after 23 minutes but Wycombe pulled off
their third away win with second-half goals from Matthew Brady, Dave Carroll
and Danny Senda.
Cardiff slipped
into more trouble despite taking a point in the 0-0 draw at Scunthorpe.
