Graham’s Millmoor invitation

RICHARD GRAHAM could be heading to Rotherham after turning down a new contract with Athletic. The 25-year-old, who is a free agent and attracting interest from several clubs, has been invited to join pre-season training by Millmoor boss Ronnie Moore. Rotherham were promoted from division three in May and hope to strengthen their squad without breaking a limited budget. Graham would be a free transfer under the Bosman ruling and Moore believes he would add skill and experience to a team stepping up in class. The fact he has been asked to train suggests Moore won't commit himself without proof that Graham is over the injury problems which have plagued his recent career.

That was the reason Athletic only offered him a 12-month contract, with wages based largely on appearances. Graham insists that his problems are now over and, having received the thumbs-up from a specialist, is seeking a longer-term contract. Meanwhile, Athletic have renewed sponsorship deals with two of their long-established partners. Lookers have signed up for another two years — taking their link with the club to 18 years — while George Hill (Oldham) will sponsor the main stand for another 12 months. The Lookers deal is worth £20,000 and includes provision of a mini-bus for Athletic's youth team, plus sponsorship of the players' awards. Financial Director Allan Marston said: "We are proud to have been with Athletic through their rise to the top flight and we hope we can play a part in their revival."

Player Sponsorship

Quite a few of you have expressed a interest in Jon of London's idea of sponsoring a player. I will get some details from the club. Meanwhile lets see how much we can gather. Please (I hate this word) PLEDGE money. I will put a total in each night so we can see where we are.

Austin of Aberdeen writesI like the idea of the trivia questions. I go back a bit and often wonder what happened to the players of Jack Rowley's successful era circa 1960???? Bert Lister, Peter Phoenix, Bobby Johnstone etc. Regards Austin of Aberdeen

Sponsorship deals extended

The Latics have announced that they have renewed two of their longer established sponsorship deals. Motor dealers Lookers have signed on for a further two years and George Hill, a local timber merchants, for a year. The Lookers deal is worth more than £20,000 to the club and includes: provision of 17-seater mini-bus for the club's youth players; a vehicle for use by the club's administration staff; the sponsorship for the player of the month and player of the season awards. In return, the Latics provide ground and programme advertising and hospitality packages in the Sponsors' lounge. Lookers finance director, Allan Marston said: "We have worked with Oldham Athletic for 16 years now and believe it has been a rewarding partnership for both sides." George Hill's name will continue to be published on season-ticket books for a further year. Latics chief executive, Alan Hardy said: "I believe that when companies of this stature show their faith and commitment in the football club, they are showing the way for the rest of the town."

Kelly backs youngster

Latics young goalkeeper David Miskelly is being tipped for stardom by Boundary Park's number one 'keeper Gary Kelly. The Republic of Ireland star says that the Northern Irish under-21 international can go all the way. "David has a chance of making it to the very top providing he continues to concentrate and work on his game," Kelly said. Kelly also sent out a sharp warning to the young talent, saying: "Any player needs the breaks to go their way and it is important that he doesn't get disillusioned and drift out of the game."

Busy trip for youths

Oldham's under-15 side kick-off their first game in the Foyle Cup tonight against Londonderry and District. The youngsters are back in action the following day when they play two games. They will face the Eire national side at 2 pm and the North East Counties of Northern Ireland at 6.30 pm. The results in these games will decide if they progress into the semi-finals and finals which will be held on Friday.

Millmoor date changed

The Latics Nationwide League Division Two fixture against Rotherham at Millmoor has been postponed. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 7th, the same day as the World Cup Qualifier between England and Germany. The two clubs have agreed to play the fixture 24 hours later on Sunday, October 8th, at 3 pm to allow fans to watch the England game.
