Today's Headlines

A BBZ subscriber from Bahrain is visiting Oldham next week and asks if anyone is going to Preston for the cup game could they take him along? Let me know if you are willing. Gary
ESPN Soccernet Preston striker Jon Macken kept his team on the heels of leaders Wigan and extended his goal tally to 14 into the bargain. A terrific strike right on the hour found the net from Kurt Nogan's rebound off the post. Visitors Oldham put up a brave fight and Steve Whitehall struck the woodwork. He also created a golden chance for Paul Rickers whose attempt was blocked by Preston keeper Gary Kelly. The Latics looked dangerous on the break, but North End stepped up a gear after the interval to clinch the points. Macken popped up again on 88 minutes to crash in a pass from sub Bjarki Gunnlaugsson to extend the Lilywhites' unbeaten run to 14 matches.

Latics lose out

Two second half goals condemned Oldham to a 2-0 defeat against Preston at Deepdale on Saturday and sees the Latics slip to sixteenth place. Oldham's injury doubts, Neil Adams, Richard Graham and Craig Dudley, all missed out on selection at Deepdale, hardly the news that Andy Ritchie wanted to hear prior to kick-off. For Preston Mark Rankine, absent against Enfield in mid-week, passed a late fitness test and was able to take his place in the centre of midfield. Preston opened by the far the stronger and created all the meaningful chances in the opening exchanges. A Julian Darby left footed shot unluckily struck a Latics defender, whilst a Michael Appleton volley hit Mark Hotte. Jon Macken almost opened the scoring but his glancing header from a Rob Edwards left sided cross drifted agonisingly wide. However, it was Oldham who crafted the two really clear cut chances to emerge in the opening half. Steve Whitehall's through ball put Paul Rickers clear on goal but Preston keeper Tepi Moilanen was equal to the test and made a superb save. Minutes later the North End defence was caught square, Whitehall was put through and, with only Tepi to beat, smashed his shot past the Finnish goalkeeper only to see the ball rebound against the post.
Preston opened the scoring, in front of the Shankly Kop, on the hour mark through top scorer Jon Macken. Rankine sold a dummy, made some space and knocked the ball out to David Eyres on the left. Eyres passed to Kurt Nogan, his shot smashed against the post and fell to Macken, who buried the rebound into the top of the net. Macken's goal opened up the game a little and there were several chances before the former Manchester United striker finally wrapped up the points with his second of the game. Tepi Moilanen saved at feet of Whitehall whilst a Graham Alexander shot was deflected just inches wide. Macken's second goal was the product of some good work from substitute Bjarki Gunnlaugsson. The Icelandic international charged through the middle before laying the ball off for Macken on the right-hand side. Full of confidence, the 22 year old smashed the ball past Gary Kelly to wrap up the points. Preston will entertain Oldham once more next Saturday in the third round of the FA Cup. Oldham will be going all out for victory having already lost twice to Preston this season.
