Tipton
scores a double
Michael Yarwood of the Oldham
Evening Chronicle writes, Teenager Matthew Tipton gave Andy Ritchie
another selection nudge last night when he scored twice for the reserves.
The Welsh striker converted two penalties in a 3-0 win at Darwen, with
Davis McNiven completing the scoring.Tipton's pre-season form is putting
severe pressure on Athletic's established front two of Mark Allott and
Junior Agogo. He grabbed his chance top shine in the first team when he
had a vital role in the winning goal against Sheffield United. While Tipton
has timed his run to perfection, Steve Whitehall is still in the starting
blocks.Whitehall was due to make his long awaited return from an ankle
injury last night, but he failed a fitness test and will be given more
time to fully recover.Preston, Athletic's opponents on Saturday, added
to their squad last night when they signed Welsh international Rob Edwards.
The midfielder or defender agreed short-term contract after leaving Bristol
City and had attracted interest from Grimsby, QPR and Stoke. The Deepdale
side also expect Steve Basham to be in their squad despite his pre-season
being interrupted by a hernia operation. Basham, the forward signed from
Southampton after a successful loan period, isn't fully match fit but is
looking sharper training.Athletic launch their re-vamped matchday programme
on Saturday, priced at £1.80.

Striker bid
accepted
Andy Ritchie has had an offer for a Premiership
striker accepted, but the finishing touches to the deal will be completed
before he's unveiled.
Ritchie is giving nothing away at
the moment but both club and player will be unveiled later today.
It is believed the player has a vast
amount of experience which would seemingly rule out Paul Beavers, who Ritchie
is still awaiting a decision on from Sunderland boss Peter Reid.
Whitehall setback
Latics reserve's ran out 3-0 winners against
Darwen last night but the one disappointment was the non-appearance of
Steve Whitehall.
Goals from Matthew Tipton (2) and
David McNiven secured the convincing victory, but unfortunately Steve Whitehall
failed a late fitness test after Andy Ritchie had been hoping to give him
a run out.
The boss stated after the game said:
"Perhaps we pushed him that little bit too hard, as we were being a little
too optimistic about the progress he was making. We'll give him another
week."
Pitch on the
mend The Latics' pitch has begun to recover
as dramatically as it deteriorated, following hours of work from groundsman,
Jack Walker.
He has been working hard throughout
the summer on the affected parts of the surface and there are signs that
the pitch should be in good nick for this campaign with new growth visible
already.
Anyone interested in buying
some old Latics programmes from the 60's and 70's let me know.
