Points win prizes, not possession

Oldham were beaten 2-1 at home to Notts County today, despite a much improved performance and a goal from Stuart Thom. Despite Oldham's lowly status in the league they started very brightly indeed, pressing County early on and pinning them down with good work from Graham, who's shot was beaten away by Darren Ward. Notts were rocked by an early injury to Mark Warren who had to be stretchered off following a clash in the tackle with a Latics man, but steadily began to improve following his return to the field only a few minutes later. Mark Stallard had a great effort which drifted wide and Darby went close before picking up his goal minutes later. A quickly taken free kick was sprayed out to Pearce and his pinpoint cross fell perfectly for a well timed run by Darby who's header crashed into the back of the net. Oldham didn't seem dented by the goal though and only took five minutes to bring the scores back level. A Rickers free kick saw Stuart Thom powering into the area and his header also bulged the back of the net. With the scores level at half time Oldham once again came out of the blocks the quicker and pinned down the Magpies in the opening minutes of the second period.
A Dudley strike tested Ward and a Hotte cross saw Rickers stretching to guide the ball home but to no avail. Notts picked up the pace and another headed goal settled the points in the final quarter, Gary Owers fired in a free kick and Craig Ramage popped up to steer the ball home past an outstretched Kelly. The Latics continued to look the better team in the second half but could not turn pressure into points that are so desperately needed. The boss made it clear that home form has to be strong if the club are to get out of their current predicament and although he will have been pleased with his sides performance, the points still seem elusive. That will have to change with the next game against Luton or the crisis may deepen a bridge too far.

STATIC LATICS SO ERRATIC

OLDHAM 1 NOTTS CO 2

Oldham boss Andy Ritchie was in no mood for excuses and admitted: "If we don't start defending better we will go down."  His side stayed bottom of the table after a third home defeat and an angry Ritchie added: "We made schoolboy errors to gift them goals."  On 38 minutes a dithering defence let Duane Darby on to a Dennis Pearce cross to head home a simple opener.  The Latics equalised when Stuart Thom headed in from a John Sheridan free-kick.  But Oldham then allowed Craig Ramage to snatch the winner after 67 minutes.

OLDHAM 1 NOTTS COUNTY 2
A goal in each half gave Notts County a 2-1 win at Oldham and kept them in the top six while condemning the struggling Latics to bottom spot. The visitors took the lead in the 38th minute. Oldham failed to cut out a cross from Dennis Pearce and Dwayne Darby was left with a simple chance to head in from six yards out. Oldham though refused to lie down and hit back with an equaliser one minute into first-half injury time. A John Sheridan free-kick was slung deep into the box and Stuart Thom stooped to head home from close range for his first goal of the season. But County made sure of the points in the 67th minute when Craig Ramage headed home a Clayton Blackmore free-kick after Oldham keeper Gary Kelly slipped on his line.
