Police
happy with City match plans
ATHLETIC
will not be making next week’s friendly with Manchester City all-ticket,
despite the prospect of George Weah and Paulo Wanchope making their City
debuts. After consulting with local police,
Boundary Park officials are happy to allocate the 4,600-seater Rochdale
Road End to visiting supporters. It is difficult to estimate the size of
City’s following and much is likely to be depend on whether Weah and Wanchope
play. Liberian star Weah, a former world
player of the year, has been captured on a free transfer from AC Milan,
while the £4million signing of striker Wanchope is set to be completed
by weekend. The City players are also
to receive medals before the game from league sponsors, Nationwide Building
Society, for finishing last season as first division runners-up.
Athletic
are unlikely to pursue interest in trialist striker Mark Quayle, even though
he scored four goals for the reserves in a 10-0 victory at Trafford. Quayle
plays for Nationwide Conference club Leigh RMI and impressed Athletic when
he recently played against them. Paul
Beavers scored a hat-trick last night, while Athletic’s other scorers were
trialist defender Barry Prenderville, Kevin Duncan and Ben Smith. Manager
Andy Ritchie made a rare appearance, playing a holding role in midfield. Athletic
field a strong side at Mossley tonight (Thursday, 7.30pm) with all 11 starters
having league experience. Youth-team coach Tony Philliskirk has been drafted
in as a substitute because of injury to Gerry McLaughlin. The
teenager was taken to hospital last night to have a gash below the knee
stitched after being hurt at Trafford.
Team:
Miskelly, Dudley, Tait, Beavers, Futcher, Thom, Salt, Boshell, Tipton,
Walsh, Innes. Subs: Campbell, Smith, Froggatt, Prenderville, Philliskirk.
Trialist
Richard Dunning’s injury woes continue with the defender suffering a recurrence
of a knee injury in Monday’s reserve-team match at Stalybridge. Dunning
hurt his knee during a loan spell from Blackburn towards the end of last
season and surgery was needed during the close season. It
is feared Dunning, who was recently released by Blackburn, has aggravated
the same injury.

Fans
chance to speak out
The Latics are
giving their fans a say in how the club is run, with the first of three
planned forums taking place in September. A cross-section of supporters
will be invited to take part in the fans forum, and the event is to be
held in the Sponsors Lounge with questions be answered by Chairman David
Brierley, Chief Executive Alan Hardy and Manager Andy Ritchie. The first
forum, which is scheduled for Thursday, September 7th, could also feature
a representative from the Local Authority. Fans wanting to take part in
the forum will have to write down their questions then send them to Boundary
Park, and you have to make sure they arrive by Monday, August 14th. Mr
Hardy said: "We are mindful that the fans have a genuine interest about
all aspects of the club, and these forums are a sincere response to those
legitimate questions. We shall write to the fans confirming their place."
He added: "Then we will be asking them to confirm their attendance and
indicate the nature of their question. This will enable us to research
an answer, if that is necessary. We do not want situations where we have
to say 'we will answer that next time.' These will be honest and open sessions
where genuine fans, with the interests of the club at heart, can get honest
answers to their questions."
Trialist
impresses in crushing win
Trialist Mark
Quayle got off to a cracking start just 48 hours after arriving at Boundary
Park. The 22 year old striker pulled on a Latics shirt for the first time
and responded by hitting four goals in the reserves 10-0 rout at Trafford.
Quayle, who was on the books at Everton as a youngster and had spells at
Grimsby and Notts County, looked the part. Andy Ritchie saw him play for
Leigh RMI in a pre-season friendly against the Latics, and was impressed
enough to invite him for a trial.
For the record,
Paul Beavers got a hat-trick, Ben Smith, Kevin Duncan and Barry Prenderville,
another trialist, got one apiece.
