Latics stroll to victory

Strikes from Craig Dudley, John Sheridan, Lee Duxbury and Steve Whitehall earned Latics a 4-0 Cup victory over minnows Chelmsford City. Two goals in two minutes put The Latics firmly in the driving seat against Dr Martens' League side Chelmsford City at Boundary Park. With Andy Ritchie's men enjoying more than their fair share of pressure and possession, Craig Dudley's 28th minute opener came as no surprise - apart from for the man himself ! Mark Innes' shot hit the unsuspecting Dudley, completely foxing Catley in the Chelmsford goal, to hand Latics the lead. Within two minutes Latics were two up, with John Sheridan diminishing fears of a fightback from the non-league outfit. The veteran campaigner fired home from just outside the area. Into the second half, both sides were going through the motions, and it took until the 70th minute for the rout to continue, with Lee Duxbury converting from 10 yards. Shortly after, Matthew Tipton hit the post before Steve Whitehall rounded off proceedings - sidefooting home from close range on 83 minutes.

LATIC LESSON

OLDHAM 4 CHELMSFORD 0

Oldham cruised into the second round with a convincing win. The contest was over when the Latics struck twice in a minute in the first half. Craig Dudley grabbed the first on 28 minutes and John Sheridan followed suit. That was the end for the brave part-timers from the Dr Martens League and Oldham grabbed two more goals through skipper Lee Duxbury, in the 70th minute, and substitute Steve Whitehall with seven minutes to go. Delighted Oldham boss Andy Ritchie said: "We didn't give them any encouragement early on and that was the key." Opposite number Gary Bellamy insisted: "We gave them too much respect."

 From the PRESS ASSOCIATION
OLDHAM 4 CHELMSFORD CITY 0
Chelmsford's dream of FA Cup giant killing was ended by Oldham who smashed four goals past them. The Dr Martens League part-timers who had already played five rounds to reach the first round proper opted for mass defending from the start. But Oldham's quick fire double inside a minute midway through the first-half left them chasing the game. The home side went in front in the 28th minute when a shot from Mark Innes was deflected into the net by Craig Dudley. Chelmsford hardly had time to recover when they were hit again as veteran John Sheridan found the net with a shot from the edge of the box. Oldham skipper Lee Duxbury made it three with an angled strike in the 70th minute and Steve Whitehall completed the scoring with seven minutes to go.
