Protest
rally hits Latics cup clash
ATHLETIC’S
FA Cup tie at Peterborough next week has been switched to Sunday - because
of animal rights protesters. A mass
rally is being staged on the Saturday and the local force insists it is
unable police both events. Peterborough
have already had to move one match this season because of protests against
testing on animals at a laboratory in nearby Huntingdon. The police have
called in reinforcements and cancelled all leave, but the game has had
to be put back by 24 hours, to December 10 (3 pm).
Peterborough
suggested a Tuesday night, but Alan Hardy, Athletic’s chief executive,
said: “We objected strongly because it would have been extremely difficult
for our fans to get there. “It would
have been a massive disadvantage if we hadn’t been able to take people
in the numbers we expect. And at the end of the day it’s important that
games -especially ones like this -are watched by as many people as possible.” The
switch has already hit Athletic’s plans as they are now forced to travel
on the day of the game. Accommodation, which had been booked for the Friday
night, cannot be changed and hotels for miles around are already full. “It’s
because of Christmas,” Mr Hardy added. “Unfortunately, it means the lads
will have to set off early and sit on a coach, instead of having a good
night’s sleep and a chance to relax.”

Jones
to miss Posh cup clash
Paul Jones
is definitely out of the FA Cup second round clash at Peterborough after
picking up a one match ban for five yellow cards. The 22-year-old defender
is the fourth player in three months to be ruled out for disciplinary reasons.
Shaun Garnett (twice), Craig Dudley and Mark Hotte are the others. Two
of Jones' cautions were picked up for the reserves.

SIGNING–AS DEFENDER PUTS PEN TO PAPER
Defender,
Wayne Hatswell has joined Oxford United from Nationwide Conference Club,
Forest Green Rovers. The 25 year old central defender looked impressive
for United’s reserves as they won 2-1 against Northampton Town, and is
expected to be included in the squad to travel to Oldham Athletic on Friday
after putting pen to paper and having a medical on Thursday evening. He
joined Forest Green Rovers from Cinderford Town after previously playing
for Witney Town and Trowbridge Town. A string of impressive performances
this season have attracted a number of league scouts to The Lawn but Oxford
have acted quickly to secure his services. As well as being a strong left
sided central defender he also likes to get into the opposing box and scored
both of Forest Green Rovers goals in the victory over Dover at the weekend.
