Graham
is hit by new injury blow
RICHARD
GRAHAM has been hit by a new injury blow which is likely to keep the Athletic
defender out of action for at least a couple of weeks. Graham
picked up a hamstring injury in Monday's reserve-team match against Burnley
but, as he completed the 90 minutes, it did not appear serious. It is only
now, three days later, that its severity has become apparent. Graham,
whose campaign has been disrupted by knee and back problems, joins Craig
Dudley on the sidelines as he, too, has a hamstring strain sustained in
last Saturday's win at Scunthorpe. It appears their is a Latics curse on
hamstrings as youngster Ben Smith was also struck down with the same problem
in last night's reserve-team defeat at Burnley.
There
was some cheer on the injury front today, however, as Gerard McLaughlin
has not broken his leg as was feared. McLaughlin was carried from the field
at Turf Moor on a stretcher with what appeared a serious injury. However,
a hospital X-ray has revealed no serious damage. If Athletic think they
have troubles, they pale into insignificance compared with those at Cambridge
— Saturday's Boundary Park visitors. Cambridge
will be without their first-choice strike pairing of Trevor Benjamin and
Tom Youngs. Benjamin, who has scored in each of the last six matches to
take his season's tally to 18 goals, misses out through suspension. Youngs,
who has found the net in five of the last six games, is ruled out with
a hamstring injury. Player-coach John Taylor (35) and teenager Nathan Lampey,
who made his debut in last Saturday's 2-1 home win against Oxford, are
expected to lead the line.
Midfield
players Paul Wanless (thigh) and Neil MacKenzie (ankle) are major doubts.
Former Manchester United player Neil Mustoe, who has recovered from injury,
and Jonathan Hunt, a loan signing from Sheffield United, could come into
the reckoning for midfield places. Shaun Marshall is also out so Lionel
Perez, on loan from Newcastle, will continue in goal. Cambridge
have won three and drawn two of their last five away matches, a run which
has helped them climb out of the bottom four. Five weeks ago Cambridge
were seven points adrift of a position of safety but since then they have
won at Notts County, Bury and Scunthorpe as well as drawing at Brentford
and Luton.

Trialist
looking to impress
Trialist
Wassim El Banna is hoping to impress during his spell at Boundary Park
in a bid to stay at the club until the end of the season. The Palestine-born
striker, who has signed on a non-contract basis after being recommended
to the Latics, revealed he wants to stay in the English game. Wassim -
who's family emigrated to Denmark when he was a child - is a Danish U-21
international and has been capped at every level from U-18's and above.
He said: "I very much want to make it as a footballer and I want to do
it with an English club." Wassim played in last night's reserve clash with
Burnley but was substituted after an unimpressive display, and is a free
agent after spending two years with top Danish side Odense.
Youngster
set for call
Ryan Sugden
looks set to replace the injured Craig Dudley for Saturday's clash with
struggling Cambridge United at Boundary Park. The 19-year-old has had an
impressive run in the reserves over recent weeks, and Andy Ritchie described
his performance this week as "excellent". Ritchie said: "He has looked
a lot better in recent games and I am hoping that is a good sign. "He could
well be back to the form which has seen him pushing hard for a first team
place in the past." The youngster has made only one start this season back
in August, but has come off the bench on ten occasions. If Sugden does
get the nod it looks likely he will again have to settle for a place on
the bench, as top-scorer Mark Allott has recovered from a hamstring injury
and should partner Steve Whitehall in attack.
Youngsters
released
Six Latics
youngsters will not be offered professional terms at the end of the season.
The club have decided to release goalie Ben Robertson, defender Alex Rock,
midfield trio Alun Olivier, Colin Hall and John Saunders, and striker Jonathan
Froggatt.
Reserves
crash against Clarets
Youngster
Gerry McLaughlin was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg during
the reserves 3-1 defeat at Burnley last night. Burnley took the lead on
the hour mark but the Latics equalised through Glen Roberts. McLaughlin's
injury proved to be the turning point as it reduced the side to ten men
as the all substitutes had been used, and the Clarets added two more before
the final whistle. Teamtalk
Burnley
Reserves
avenge cup exit
The reserves
took advantage of their numerical superiority on Wednesday night at Turf
Moor to beat Oldham 3-1. The result avenged Monday's 4-2 cup defeat at
the hands of the Latics. Oldham played the last quarter of an hour with
only ten men after Gerard Mclaughlin had to be stretchered off following
a hefty challenge from Eamonn Kelly with Tony Philliskirk having already
made three substitutions. The first half was a dull affair, although Oldham
created the better chances. Matthew Tipton - who played against the Burnley
first team in January, hit the side-netting after Craig Mawson made an
excellent stop from Ben Smith.
Burnley took
the lead just before the hour when Michael Devenney fired in a low cross
and Andrew Leeson dived in at the far post to convert. But the Latics equalised
eight minutes later. Substitute Jonathan Froggatt whipped over a fine cross,
and Smith looped his header over substitute keeper Andy Paxton into the
far corner. However, after the loss of McLaughlin, the Clarets took advantage
but only after Kelly saw a penalty saved by the legs of Ben Robertson
after Ben Futcher had brought down Anthony Shandran. But Paul Barrett made
amends with a stunning headed goal. Shandran laid the ball out wide to
Devenney, who whipped in a wonderful ball, which the local schoolboy making
his reserve team debut met, flashing a header past the 'keeper. Having
created both Burnley goals, Devenney sealed the points, following up to
score after Robertson saved Shandran's header from point black range.

Ritchie
looking for Latics to finish on a high
|
| Oldham
manager Andy Ritchie is hoping for an impressive finish to the season,
despite being out of contention for a play-off place. Having already reached
mid-table security, the Latics boss wants his side to the finish the season
on a high, starting with the Cambridge United game. Ritchie said: "I want
to get as many points as we can before the end of the season and definitely
finish in the top-half." Richard Grahams will miss the game having picked
up a hamstring injury. Free-scoring striker Trevor Benjamin is suspended
for Cambridge United. Captain Paul Wanless is doubtful with a thigh injury
but boss Roy McFarland hopes he will be able to pass a late fitness test.
Tom Youngs, who has excelled in recent weeks on the left hand side of United's
attack, is also likely to miss out with injury. Jonathan Hunt is in contention
for a place in midfield while the Us may be forced to change their formation
due to the injury woes at the Abbey Stadium. |

BURNLEY
RES 3 OLDHAM RES 1
BURNLEY'S young
guns avenged Monday night's Pontins League Cup defeat at the hands of the
Latics with a performance packed with verve at Turf Moor last night. After
crashing 4-2 at Boundary Park two days earlier, the Clarets bounced back
in style thanks to goals from Andrew Leeson, Paul Barrett and Michael Devenney.
Devenney, in particular, caught the eye, instigating most of the home side's
best work going forward. The Clarets showed plenty of spirit in an entertaining
first half. Eamon Kelly shot narrowly wide and a Devenney effort flew inches
over before Craig Mawson thwarted Oldham's El Banna with a fine save.
The Latics stepped
up a gear after the break as Mathew Tipton tested Andy Paxton, who had
come on to replace Mawson. But it was the Clarets who finally broke the
deadlock when Leeson ghosted in at the back post to finish off a pin-point
Devenney centre. Oldham's reply was almost instant, however, as Ben Smith
looped a header beyond Mawson. But the visitors were then reduced to 10
men when Gerrard McLaughlin was stretchered off with a suspected broken
leg and Burnley took maximum advantage. Substitute Barrett put the Clarets
back in front with a superb header from another Devenney cross. And Devenney,
himself, capped a fine individual performance by adding a third in stoppage
time. The Clarets could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty as Eamon
Kelly's spot-kick was saved by Ben Robertson.
Team: Mawson,
Leeson, Devenney, Scott, Heywood, Davis, Bowden, Clark, Shandran, Kelly,
Pilkington. Subs: Paxton (for Mawson), O'Neill (for Clark), Barrett (for
O'Neill) Not used: Waine, Fogarty.
