ATHLETIC’S Aussie trialists will finally get their chance tonight when the title-chasing reserves take on Preston at Boundary Park. Kon Antoniou and Peter Mihalopoulos didn’t have international clearance for last week’s Pontins League game and have had to wait almost two weeks to get into competitive action. Victory tonight would keep Athletic on track for the premier division championship. They are currently five points behind Port Vale but have two games in hand.
Antoniou (22) will play in a three-man defence alongside Ben Futcher and Richard Graham. Graham, who made a 13-minute comeback for the first team on Saturday, needs as many games as possible to regain full fitness. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Mihalopoulos is paired up front with Ryan Sugden, who could well be back in the senior squad this weekend. That will depend on whether Andy Ritchie can bring in a striker before Saturday’s match at Millwall.
The man he has targeted is with a first division team, but he will only be available on loan if the club’s injury problems clear up quickly. Ritchie said: “I have one or two other irons in the fire and, as always, I won’t be rushing into anything.” Although Craig Dudley — who has missed four games with a foot injury — will not play tonight, he hasn’t been ruled out of the Millwall game. He could still be fit enough to be a substitute and Ritchie doesn’t feel he needs any action beforehand. Despite the recent weather, Athletic expect tonight’s match to go ahead as planned.
Reserves: Miskelly, Futcher, Antoniou, Graham, Jones, Tait, Innes, Boshell, Walsh, Sugden, Mihalopoulos. Subs: Campbell, McLoughlin, Gardiner, Smith, Wardle. David McNiven and Ian McLean, both of whom are available on free transfers, have been scuppered in their latest hopes of a move.
Striker McNiven was set to play for Chester’s reserves today, with full-back McLean facing him in the same game for Mansfield. But neither of the third division clubs were willing to insure the Athletic players while they were on trial.

I know how much time and dedication it takes and a few words of encouragement make it all worthwhile as I have found out myself in the past. Keep it up Gary, you're doing great.
