Today's Headlines

I will be producing these dummy runs over the next month and I will send them over the Latics mailing list but if you want to receive your copy daily after 1st August you will have to e-mail me at the address at the bottom to be added to the list.  Gary
Michael Yarwood of the Oldham Evening Chronicle writes, Matthew Tipton is pressing for a first team spot after hitting form just in time for the new season.Tipton has been sidelined as Mark Allott and Junior Agogo have struck a promising partnership. Tipton (19) struck two goals in last nights 3-2 win at Mossley. The victory for a young Athletic side was sealed with 10 minutes left with a Paul Rickers strike.Tipton spent most of last season on the bench scoring only twice before badly damaging his elbow in may. He will again be amongst the subs on Saturday against Sheffield United but he knows he has a chance to make a early impact.Amongst those pressing for a place up front will be trialist Mark Johnson a 22 year old Irishman who was at St. Mirren last week. Johnston will have a week at Boundary park and is likely to play for the reserves tomorrow at Chadderton (19.30).Carl Trantor the Kingstonian striker that Oldham have trailed for several months is heading back to non-league football after failing to impress in pre-season.

Defensive duo shine

The Latics centre half pairing of Shaun Garnett and Stuart Thom are looking full of confidence, and are looking set to build a solid base at the back.
The duo look certain to be the first choice pairing in the heart of the defence, for the opening day clash against Preston next Saturday.
The Oldham defence has looked pretty solid during pre-season, and have kept two clean sheets against higher opposition in Watford and Blackburn.
Garnett and Thom did very well against Rovers, stopping both Kevin Davies and Kevin Gallacher from scoring in Andy Ritchie's testimonial.

Adams to play on

Neil Adams has played down all talk of retirement, and says he's still got lots to offer Oldham, and plans to play on for another five years.
The 33 year old revealed: "I am enjoying my football just as much as ever, and I have no plans to retire. I haven't just come back to Boundary Park to see out my career."
He added: "I have come back to do a job for Oldham, and intend to see it through. I want to help the club get back to it's feet, and in a higher division where they belong."
Adams has already made an impact since his free transfer move from Norwich earlier this month.
He was one of the stars of the Isle of Man success, and his versatility will be very useful for the Latics.
Adams hinted at where he might favour, adding: "Playing out wide can get a bit lonely, you are always in the thick of the action in the middle."

Third trialist joins

The Latics are taking a look at a third trialist ahead of the new season, the latest player out to impress is defender Chris Siddall.

The teenage centre half was recently released by Premiership Sheffield Wednesday, and is now on the look out for a new club.

Siddall joins former Newcastle full back Jordan Tait and former Southampton midfielder Paul Tisdale trying to earn a deal at Boundary Park.

Andy Ritchie has to make his mind up this week, whether they are better than the players already on the books and if they are worth a permanent deal.
