Kelly's heroics not enough

Keeper Gary Kelly's brilliant display wasn't enough to stop Oxford winning 1-0 at the Manor Ground, leaving the Latics pointless and goalless. Kelly produced a string of fine saves throughout the clash to ensure Oldham were always in with a chance of salvaging something from the match, however it wasn't to be. Oxford had failed to keep a clean sheet so far this season, while the Latics had neither a point, nor a goal, to their name so something had to give in this game, and unfortunately it went in Oxford's favour as they dominated proceedings throughout. The decisive goal came just after the quarter-of-an-hour mark when Shaun Garnett was adjudged to have fouled big Steve Anthrobus in the area and Matt Murphy made no hesitation from the penalty spot.
Oxford's Mark Watson and Paul Powell combined to set up Simon Weatherstone, however Kelly did well to tip away his goalbound header and on 11 minutes Joey Beauchamp kicked at thin air after another good cross from Watson - had he struck the ball it would have been a certain goal. After Murphy's penalty, Derek Lilley, Weatherstone and Anthrobus all had great opportunities to increase Oxford's lead but spurned their chances. Meanwhile Oldham went closest in the first half when Oxford keeper Paul Lundin saved a vicious effort from Phil Salt and Scott McNiven's drive went wide. In the second half Oxford turned up the pressure and should really have won by four or five, but the form of Kelly ensured it remained one. He saved two great efforts from Lilley, but kept his best save until the very end, denying Murphy's 85th minute volley.Despite all the pressure Oldham might have snatched an equaliser when Lundin got down well to save John Sheridan's free-kick. Scunthorpe's victory against Bournemouth means that Andy Ritchie's men are now rooted to the foot of the second division table without a goal or a point this season.

Still no goals....or points

The Latics failed to score again yesterday and, as such, have failed to score in the league this season and are bottom of the league table. With Monday's scheduled game against Millwall postponed due to international call-ups Andy Ritchie has until next Saturday to try and find the winning formula. Things won't get any easier next Saturday when the Latics make the long trip to Kent to take on last year's play-off final losers Gillingham. The Latics have scored this season but the goal, scored by Neil Adams five minutes from the end of their Worthington Cup tie, was academic as the Latics trailed 3-0 on aggregate. Their striker's, including new signing Paul Beavers, have failed to gel and the early season optimism has all but dissipated.

Oxford United made hard work of beating pointless Oldham 1-0, who have yet to score a league goal. They had to rely on a 16th-minute penalty given away by Shaun Garnett for a foul on Steve Anthrobus and converted by Matt Murphy. The visitors had little to offer in the first half and goalkeeper Gary Kelly kept them in the match early in the second half with magnificent saves from Derek Lilley and Simon Weatherstone.  It encouraged Oldham to put in more effort but their finishing in front of goal was weak.Andrew Holt went close after 63 minutes with a low cross which substitute Paul Beavers failed to reach on the goal-line.United finished strongly and Kelly superbly saved a half volley from Joey Beauchamp five minutes from the end.

IT'S A BIT RICH

OXFORD 1 OLDHAM 0

Oldham boss Andy Ritchie slammed his strikers for not being brave enough as the Lactics sorry start to the season continued. They fell to a 16th-minute penalty from Oxford's Matt Murphy after a foul by Shaun Garnett on Steve Antrobus. But Ritchie insisted it was never a penalty. "The referee was conned twice because it should have been a free-kick to us in the first place and he was conned again into believing it was a push," Ritchie said. "You have to be prepared to get kicked and go into areas where you might get hurt to try to get a goal - but my players just weren't.''
