Latics in row over Irish defender

ATHLETIC have accused Irish club Glentoran of blocking their move for a talented teenage defender. Hugh Dickson (18) had trials at Boundary Park against the wishes of his manager, who then refused permission for him to play in Athletic's reserves. Glentoran boss Roy Coyle has asked the Irish FA to investigate as he now fears his first-team regular, who still plays as an amateur, will turn down professional forms. But Athletic No. 2 Bill Urmson believes Dickson's chance of a full-time career has been hit by Glentoran's tough stance.

Urmson, who spotted Dickson during a scouting trip, said: "We approached Glentoran about the young lad coming across the water and as far as I am concerned we did everything right, going through the appropriate channels. But, unfortunately for Hugh, Glentoran didn't allow us to play him in a game. "He is a great lad and looked very sharp in training, quite a talent. "But we really have to see him in a game to decide whether we could take things a step further. "There is no doubt he has a chance of making it, but on this occasion he wasn't given the opportunity to show what he could do in a match. "Personally, I think it's very unfair on Hugh. He seems to be getting a rough deal from his club and is very upset by what has happened."  Dickson played in the Irish Cup final this year and his manager did all he could to stop him having a spell at Athletic. When Dickson ignored those pleas, Coyle wouldn't allow the international clearance needed for a reserve-team appearance.

Said Coyle: "I didn't grant permission for this trial to take place, but at the same time I told Hugh I couldn't stop him. "I was disappointed when he went over, but to hear this about us stopping his progress and a potential move makes me very angry." Dickson will not return to Boundary Park unless Glentoran reverse their decision or he can secure his own release.

Athletic will play Bury in Saturday's Isle of Man Festival final after the Gigg Lane outfit beat Stoke 2-1. The Isle of Man's 1-0 victory over Burnley was their first win against a professional team in 103 years of trying. It sparked a pitch invasion and celebrations across the island.

Youth director starts

The Latics new Director of Youth Development, Andrew Beaglehole, has taken up his post with the club. The 37 year old said: "I was sold the club by the chairman, chief executive and Andy Ritchie." He certainly brings with him plenty of experience. He is a former youth coach with Middlesborough and Forest and came to Boundary Park from Leeds who certainly aren't short of good youngsters at the moment. His brief is to oversee the development of all Latics youngsters from the age of 10 upwards. He'll work closely with youth team coach Tony Philliskirk and senior coach David Cross. The Latics have an excellent record of producing home-grown players and seeing them through to the senior side and Beagle hole wants to build on that. He said: "Top Premiership clubs are looking under every blade of grass to get players and the pressure is growing. But youngsters stand a better chance of breaking through to the first teams by joining local clubs. If I didn't believe that then I wouldn't be here."

Duo Ok

John Sheridan and Shaun Garnett who were forced to miss Monday's match against the Isle of Man are now back in full training. Oldham managed to beat the hosts of the Isle of Man Football Festival on Monday to claim a place in the final and will take on Bury after they earned a place by beating Stoke last night.
However, Sheridan had to miss Monday's game with a thigh strain and Garnett had to miss it due to a back problem. However, both have since returned to full training without any reaction to their respective problems and will now try and earn a place in the side for Saturday's game.
