ATHLETIC have accused Irish club Glentoran of blocking their move for a talented teenage defender. Hugh Dickson (18) had trials at Boundary Park against the wishes of his manager, who then refused permission for him to play in Athletic's reserves. Glentoran boss Roy Coyle has asked the Irish FA to investigate as he now fears his first-team regular, who still plays as an amateur, will turn down professional forms. But Athletic No. 2 Bill Urmson believes Dickson's chance of a full-time career has been hit by Glentoran's tough stance.
Urmson, who spotted Dickson during a scouting trip, said: "We approached Glentoran about the young lad coming across the water and as far as I am concerned we did everything right, going through the appropriate channels. But, unfortunately for Hugh, Glentoran didn't allow us to play him in a game. "He is a great lad and looked very sharp in training, quite a talent. "But we really have to see him in a game to decide whether we could take things a step further. "There is no doubt he has a chance of making it, but on this occasion he wasn't given the opportunity to show what he could do in a match. "Personally, I think it's very unfair on Hugh. He seems to be getting a rough deal from his club and is very upset by what has happened." Dickson played in the Irish Cup final this year and his manager did all he could to stop him having a spell at Athletic. When Dickson ignored those pleas, Coyle wouldn't allow the international clearance needed for a reserve-team appearance.
Said Coyle: "I didn't grant permission for this trial to take place, but at the same time I told Hugh I couldn't stop him. "I was disappointed when he went over, but to hear this about us stopping his progress and a potential move makes me very angry." Dickson will not return to Boundary Park unless Glentoran reverse their decision or he can secure his own release.
Athletic will play Bury in Saturday's Isle of Man Festival final after the Gigg Lane outfit beat Stoke 2-1. The Isle of Man's 1-0 victory over Burnley was their first win against a professional team in 103 years of trying. It sparked a pitch invasion and celebrations across the island.
Oldham Athletic hope to announce the signing of an international striker at a press conference tomorrow morning. The player was today undergoing medical examinations and was expected to sign when these were successfully completed.
