Hotte's reward is three-year deal

MARK HOTTE'S rapid rise to prominence this season has been rewarded by a new, improved three-year contract.

The length of the deal is a show of faith in 21-year-old Hotte and completes a remarkable turnaround in his career at Athletic.

The centre-back was on the verge of leaving Boundary Park in the summer until a change of heart on both sides saw him sign for another 12 months. He was thrust into first-team action during an injury crisis in October and, making the most of his unexpected chance, hasn't looked back.

Manager Andy Ritchie said: "What happened in the summer probably gave him the kick up the backside he needed. He even went on trial at Bury and came very, very close to leaving here. He has taken his chance very well this season and shown the quality we all knew he possessed.

"He is quick, he reads the game well and, even if everyone was fit, it would be hard to leave him out of the side. That's a sign of the progress he has made. He was out of contract at the end of this season and we wanted to make sure everything was sorted out well before then."

After Gary Kelly and John Sheridan, Hotte is the third player in a week to pledge his future to Athletic. Club officials are trying to tie down other key men before their deals run out and are well advanced in their talks with Mark Allott and Scott McNiven.

Athletic's reserves face a vital match at Wolves tonight as they bid to get back on track in the Pontins League premier division. Having led the table earlier this season, they are slipping out of contention after going five games without a win. An inexperienced side will travel to Molineux, with Richard Graham the only player older than 21. Finnish trialist Tero Karhu has his last chance to impress, but international clearance has not come through for Australian pair Kon Antoniou and Peter Mihalopoulos. Paul Beavers is still missing with a groin injury. Reserves: Miskelly, Tait, Roberts, Graham, Jones, Futcher, Karhu, Boshell, Innes, Wardle, Sugden. Subs: Campbell, Walsh, Gardiner, McLoughlin, Smith.

Intl. clearance too late

The Latics have failed to get international clearance to play Aussie trialists Mihalopoulos and Antoniou in tonight's reserve game against Wolves. The duo have been training at Boundary Park all week and Andy Ritchie said: "They are all doing very well and certainly look the part. However, I will have to watch them in match action before I can make any decision." The pair now look set to play in a reserve team fixture next week if international clearance comes through in time. Another trialist 20 year old Finnish midfielder Tero Karhu will get his final chance to impress at Molineux after already figuring in two other reserve team games.
The match will also be used by Jordan Tait and Richard Graham, to continue their comebacks and first team fringe players Paul Jones, Ben Futcher and Mark Innes along with Ryan Sugden are also named in the line up.
