Tony Bugby of the Oldham
Evening Chronicle writes,PAUL
BEAVERS has played his way back into Athletic's plans for Saturday's league
match at Oxford. An impressive display for the reserves Cup tie against
Manchester City last night, in which he scored, has earned the 20-year-old
a first team recall. Beavers, recently signed on a free transfer from Sunderland,
has so far failed to recapture the form shown during a loan spell last
season. Indeed, he was omitted from Athletic's 16 strong squad for the
midweek Worthington Cup tie against Stockport. Manager Andy Ritchie was
pleased with Beavers' display against a strong City side. Beavers might,
in fact, have scored a hatful but for the brilliance of City 'keeper Richard
McKinney.
Ritchie said: "I was pleased with Paul's
performance - it was the best since he signed. "He looked stronger and
fitter and would have scored a hat trick but for two great saves. "And
maybe if he had been sharper, he could have had another two". Ritchie added
that Beavers had barely kicked a ball with Sunderland in pre-season so
he arrived lacking match fitness. He also pointed out Beavers has had problems
house- hunting and he believes these facts have contributed to his disappointing
start to the campaign. Ritchie saw signs last night, though, that Beavers
is regaining the form he showed during his loan spell late last season
when he scored twice in seven matches. The Athletic manager was also pleased
with the performance of Steve Whitehall, Beavers' co-striker last night.
Whitehall, regaining match fitness after ankle surgery at the end of last
season, also found the net, and looked sharper than at Preston in last
week's reserve-team match.

Skipper back
for Oxford
The Latics are hoping to have Lee Duxbury
back for this weekend's game against Oxford following his two game absence
through illness. The influential skipper has been out of action with a
bout of tonsillitis and a stomach bug. Andy Ritchie has commented: "He
has been at a low ebb and hasn't looked well at all." Duxbury is due back
in training on Thursday and is expected to have recovered in time for the
trip to the Manor Ground. The player had previously been absent only once
since last October and his driving presence in midfield has been sorely
missed.
