Latics concede late equaliser

Having taken the lead through Mark Allott in the 69th minute, Andy Ritchie's side conceded a 94th minute equaliser, for the game to finish 1-1.
The Latics started brightly in what was always going to be a tough game with John Sheridan sending a whistling free kick from 25 yards just wide of Scott Howie's upright. However, Reading had by far the better chances to take the lead, the best in the opening period though, from the penalty spot with Darren Caskey taking a tame spot kick which was easy for Gary Kelly to deal with. However, it was Oldham who took the lead, against the run of play in the 69th minute as Ritchie's side forced two corners, neither of which the Royals' defence cleared. Neil Smith, in fact 'cleared' the second one back into his own area and the defence having given Mark Allott far too much time and room paid heavily, as he shot across Howie and into the back of the net. It took Reading until the 94th minute to get level, four minutes of injury time being played out due to the fact that Jimmy McIntyre had picked up a head injury earlier in the game, which lead to him having to be taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Andy Ritchie must have thought that his side had done enough to battle for maximum points which would have doubled their tally before kick off, only to watch on as Darren Caskey chipped the ball into the area for Nicky Foster to lay off to John Polston who drove a low shot past Gary Kelly and into the bottom corner for the equaliser. The result leaves Oldham rooted to the bottom with four points whilst Alan Pardew will have at least been happy to get something from the game having seen his side waste plenty of chances, the Royals now sit in 18th spot with 8 points on the board.

Striker misses out

Steve Whitehall has lost his battle for fitness and so youngster Ryan Sugden has been drafted in to the squad for the game against Reading. Whitehall finally admitted defeat in his battle for fitness on yesterday morning, reporting that his ankle was still causing quite some discomfort. Ryan Sugden has thus been drafted into the senior squad for only the second time this season. Richard Graham has also been named in the squad following a successful reserve team outing in mid-week. The big defender, who has overcome a career threatening injury, is set for his first start in ten months. Fellow defender Stuart Thom, who has been out with a broken toe, also played for the reserves in mid-week and has been included in the squad. Meanwhile teenage defender Ben Futcher, son of former Latics favourite Paul Futcher, has been included in the senior squad for the first time.

Reading defender John Polston came on off the bench to hit rock-bottom Oldham with a dramatic equaliser nearly five minutes into injury time. Polston was on hand to hammer the ball low into the Oldham net after a Reading attack had only been partially cleared. Until that moment Oldham looked like grabbing only their second league win of the season with a Mark Allott goal in the 69th minute. Reading appealed for off side as Allott ran off to a Neil Adams through ball but referee Paul Robinson waived play on and Allott gave Reading keeper Scott Howie no chance. Reading had missed a penalty in the tenth minute when Darren Caskey shot tamely to Gary Kelly's left, giving the Oldham keeper the chance to make a comfortable save.
