Teamtalk Oldham A late goal from Tim Cahill was enough to give Millwall all three points as they defeated a plucky Oldham side at Boundary Park on Saturday. The Latics put up a terrific fight but never did enough to prevent Millwall from stretching their impressive run to a mere two defeats in the last 13 games. Oldham's best chances to score came in the first half. Carlo Corazzin had a golden opportunity as early as the third minute, but he miscontrolled a cross on the penalty spot. Two minutes later, Lee Duxbury sent in Craig Dudley, but he fired straight at the goalkeeper. After that, it was virtual one-way traffic, with Oldham keeper Gary Kelly pulling off a string of terrific saves in the second half to give the home side a chance of a point. But the Lions' pressure proved too much when they grabbed the winner 11 minutes from time. An already battered defence was left exposed and Neil Harris set up Cahill, who couldn't miss from four yards out. Dudley remained Oldham's most dangerous player throughout, but the Latics' lack of cutting edge which has dogged them for most of the season again cost them dear. The result sees Millwall sitting proudly at the top of the Division Two.
Sport.com Millwall went top of the Second Division thanks to a late goal from midfield man Tim Cahill. The winner arrived after 78 minutes but Mark McGhee's men had dominated the second half and already wasted plenty of chances to see off struggling Oldham. The Lions have lost only twice since McGhee took charge in September and in striker Neil Harris have a livewire player who set up their goal and again impressed the watching scouts. The manager however insisted that Harris was still very much a Millwall player. He said: " We have had no contact from anyone although there has been a lot of talk about people being interested, which isn't surprising. But I was promised I wouldn't have to sell unless it was to improve the side and I certainly wouldn't improve the side by selling Neil Harris." Oldham boss Andy Ritchie took heart from his side's display and thought there were plenty of positive aspects to the defeat. "Some of the younger lads have learnt a few lessons against probably the best side in our league," said Ritchie.

Oldham made the brighter start on a tiring and muddy pitch which had to pass an 8.30am inspection. Carlo Corazzin and Anthony Carss both had half chances but Millwall looked good at the back and openings were few and far between. Harris, who was sent off against Oldham last season, was booked for a 34th minute tackle on Scott McNiven. And, as the match gained some much needed momentum, Joe Dolan was given the second of four yellow cards for the visitors. The entertainment increased after the break as Craig Dudley hit two 20 yard drives - the first dipping just over and the second being palmed away by Tony Warner. But it was then that Millwall took over and Gary Kelly had to deny Cahill's header at the far post.

Harris and Moody then had chances, while Steven Reid shaved the post with a header. Harris was next to go close with a prodded shot from 12 yards after he intercepted a stray back pass. The pressure had to tell and, with time running out, Harris weaved his way through on the right hand side of Oldham's box. He crossed low into the six yard area where Cahill controlled the ball before crashing it high into the net.

Sporting Life Saturday Review

Millwall went to the top of the Division Two table with a 1-0 win at Oldham where Aussie midfielder Tim Cahill was the hero with the 79th minute decider.

Wigan and Bristol City maintained their unbeaten records in a 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate, Louis Carey's own goal putting Wigan in front and Lee Peacock equalising for City, unbeaten in 13, while the deposed leaders have not gone down in 15 games.

Walsall are second on goal difference after a comfortable 3-0 win over Northampton, Jorge Leitao bagging his 10th and Paul Hall and Brett Angell the other scorers.

Rotherham stayed on the heels of the leaders with a 3-0 blasting of Peterborough, with Guy Branston, Paul Hurst and Mark Robins scoring for the merry Millers.

Cambridge must have thought they were going to win for the first time in nine games when they went three in front against Swansea through Paul Wanless, Tom Youngs and Paul Connor. But the Swans hit back with Giovani Savarese scoring twice and a last minute equaliser from Steve Watkin making it 3-3.

Notts County made it three wins in four starts with a 3-2 win at Oxford who stay rooted to the bottom of the table. The Dark Blues led through Matt Murphy's two goals but Danny Allsopp had a brace, the second a penalty, and Adam Newton bagged the winner three minutes from time.

Colchester partially recovered from last week's cup exit at Yeovil to draw 0-0 with Wycombe but Wrexham, also knocked out at the first stage, went one better and beat Bristol Rovers, the best away side in the division. Gareth Owen scored the only goal in the last minute seconds after Pirates' Andy Thomson was sent off for use of abusive language.

Luton stay deep in trouble after a 3-0 defeat at Port Vale, now unbeaten in four to ease their problems. Michael Walsh, Tony Naylor and Jeff Minton the scorers.

Stoke, FA Cup victims of non-League Nuneaton, restored a measure of pride with a 3-0 win at Swindon who stay in the bottom three with no win in four games. A Richard Dryden own goal put the Potters on track and two from Kyle Lightbourne made the game safe.

Bournemouth and Reading and Bury against Brentford were postponed because of waterlogged surfaces.
