Reading picked up their first away points of the season and ended Oldham's three-match unbeaten run with a 2-1 win. They went in front after nine minutes when Andy Gurney hit his first goal of the season after a Keith Scott effort had rebounded off a post. Oldham fought back to equalise after 20 minutes when Craig Dudley, making his full home debut, scored his first goal for the club after taking advantage of a defensive mistake. The Royals took all three points though with a controversial penalty decision on the stroke of half time. Oldham were pulled up when a shot hit Paul Rickers on the hand with his arms at his side. Keeper Gary Kelly saved Darren Caskey's first spot-kick but he made no mistake with the second after it was ordered to be re-taken when Oldham defenders encroached in the box.

Ritchie blasts ref
Andy Ritchie and Reading boss Alan Pardew were both less than pleased with the standard of refereeing yesterday as Oldham went down to the odd goal in three. Oldham had battled well throughout the game and did level the game at 1-1 through Craig Dudley, but could not hold on for a point. Although not blaming the referee for the actual defeat, Ritchie was clearly not pleased with the man in the middle. "Both sides tried to play football, but the officials made it difficult," he said.

Latics defeated by Reading

Oldham failed to improve on their recent good record as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Reading, after a 45th minute penalty sealed it for the Visitors. Reading started this game the better of the two sides and they made their early pressure tell in the 8th minute. Darren Caskey launched a pass over the Oldham defence and found striker Keith Scott running down the inside left channel. Scott's shot hit the woodwork and the ball rebounded to Andy Gurney. Gurney found himself unmarked and had the simplest task of placing the ball into an open net. Oldham began to fight back as the half wore on and were denied an equaliser by two good saves from the Royals keeper Phil Whitehead. But in the 20th minute Oldham's fight back was complete. Richard Graham cleared the ball out of the Oldham defence and it found it's way to young striker Craig Dudley. There was a suspicion that Dudley might have used his hand in controlling the ball but the referee waved play on and the youngster placed the ball past the diving Whitehead. Reading responded to the Oldham equaliser by slipping into a higher gear. Oldham rode their luck as Reading peppered the Oldham goal with long range efforts in the last ten minutes of the first half. In the final minute of the first half Referee Joslin awarded Reading a penalty after Paul Rickers appeared to handle the ball in the box. Darren Caskey placed the ball to the left hand of the 'keeper, but Gary Kelly made a superb save. The Referee however made a controversial decision which was to decide the match. The man in black decided the spot-kick should be retaken due to a number of players encroaching into the box before the ball was struck. This time Caskey made no mistake and sent Kelly the wrong way to send Reading in 2-1 leaders at halftime. Reading had a chance just after the break to put the game out of Oldhams reach. In the 52nd minute Caskey floated a free-kick to the far post. The Oldham defenders looked for offside but the assistant referee's flag stayed down and the ball fell onto the head of Martin Williams who wasted the chance by placing it wide from six yards. Phil Whitehead again made a good save to preserve Reading's lead when Dudley ,looking for his second ever career goal saw his chance stopped by the Royals 'keeper. The game degenerated in the second half and there were few chances until the 90th minute when Oldham's Richard Graham appeared to be tugged at in the area but the referee decided no foul play had occoured.
The win gave Reading their first away success of the season and sent them to 17th in the table where as Oldham fell to 20th in Division two.

Referee Phil Joslin demanded police protection following a controversial penalty decision which ended Oldham's revival three- match unbeaten run.  Reading took the lead through Andy Gurney on nine minutes. The home side equalised 11 minutes later thanks to youngster Craig Dudley.  But the heated row after Joslin had awarded Reading a penalty left a sour taste. Darren Caskey's shot was superbly saved by keeper Kelly but it had to be retaken much to everyone's bewiderment. Joslin argued that the Oldham defenders had encroached in the area, and Caskey made no mistake with his second effort.
