Time for players to match away-day form, says boss

ATHLETIC must beat the fear factor if they are to deliver a Christmas pick-me-up to 'flu-hit manager Andy Ritchie. That's the verdict of Ritchie himself, who is desperate for his side to repeat their away form in Sunday's clash with Scunthorpe at Boundary Park (3pm). It has become a trend of Ritchie's reign for Athletic to pick up points on their travels, only to ruin all the good work in front of their own fans. After last week's convincing display at Cambridge, Boxing Day brings another chance to lay that ghost to rest. Ritchie admitted: "We have to start winning our home games more consistently. "We are doing well away because we play with much more freedom. "It's time we started doing the same thing at Boundary Park — time we stopped going out and looking so apprehensive. "The players sometimes look as though they are worried. They seem to feel that, if they aren't 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes, the crowd will start to get on their backs." Athletic will have to tread carefully if they are to avoid a glut of New Year suspensions. Three players are now one booking away from a ban, while another needs only two more yellow cards to be consigned to a spell on the sidelines. Mark Hotte will be the first ruled out this season after seeing red at Preston. John Sheridan and Matthew Tipton have been joined by Lee Duxbury as players on four bookings —one short of a suspension —while Shaun Garnett's caution at Cambridge took him to three. Hotte's absence means Paul Jones looks certain to make his league debut a month after signing from non-league Leigh RMI.

ATHLETIC (probable): Kelly, S McNiven, Holt, Garnett, Jones, Rickers, Adams, Duxbury, Sheridan, Allott, Whitehall. Subs: Futcher, Innes, Tipton, Dudley, Miskelly. Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws is set to name an all-African strike force after signing Manny Omoyimni on loan from West Ham. The Nigerian was the man who caused the Worthington Cup row between the Hammers and Aston Villa when he made a brief appearance despite being cup-tied. Omoyimni is expected to make his debut alongside Cameroon-born Guy Ipoua.

Plans lodged to build houses on Boundary Park

A DEVELOPER has submitted a planning application to build houses on the site of Oldham Athletic's ground.

The new owner of the site, Hiretarget Ltd, has put in the bid for outline planning permission for the land covering the current ground, training pitch, car parks, and rough areas. It will now be considered by members of the Planning Committee. Mr Keith Coates, the Director of Economic Development for Oldham Council and a director of Hiretarget, said the application was a fail-safe in case the Charity Commission failed to approve a swap for the land and Clayton playing fields.

The company has already applied to build a new stadium on the Clayton fields, with the fields effectively being transferred to the current Boundary Park site. If the land swap is approved by the Charity Commission, the residential development application would become void. Mr Coates said: ``It is a fail-safe, covering the position if the land swoop fails to go through. ``In any case, nothing can be done with the site for at least five years as Oldham Athletic have the lease for that time. ``They also have an option to renew the lease, which would also prevent anything being done on the land.'' He added: ``If Clayton playing fields is taken for the stadium, Boundary Park will be the replacement, making this application null and void.''

There are said to be two other possible sites for a new stadium should the Charity Commission reject the deal. A bid to turn Clayton playing fields into a town green could also mean the Boundary Park site used for housing. The area of land subject to the application is bounded by Sheepfoot Lane, and Furtherwood Road in front of Boundary Park. It excludes Clayton Arms sports hall and club, and the Martin Darlington Transport premises, in Sheepfoot Lane. The boundary runs along the top of Clayton playing fields to houses in Downham Close, and along the back of these homes and those in Carlton Way, along Plumpton Clough and back to Sheepfoot Lane.

Rookie set for start

Young defender Paul Jones will be given his league debut in the Boxing Day clash with Scunthorpe, as Mark Hotte misses out. Jones, who was signed from Leigh RMI last month, comes in for Hotte who sits out a one match ban. Boss Andy Ritchie will stick with the strike force of top scorer Mark Allott and Steve Whitehall, despite the claims of exciting youngster Craig Dudley. Ritchie said: "It would be out of order to leave those two out. They are both running their socks off and until their form dips we have to be loyal to them." Scunthorpe are two places below the Latics and Ritchie added: "It is another chance to put some daylight between us and the clubs at the bottom."

MARK IN HOTTE WATER
Oldham's Mark Hotte misses the visit of Scunthorpe to Boundary Park on Boxing Day through suspension. Andy Ritchie's Latics squad have managed to stave off the bout of flu that has swept through the club and he expects to name the same players that recorded the impressive 3-2 win at Cambridge last week. That means Mark Allott and Steve Whitehall will keep their places against the Iron. Three points will keep Athletic's climb away from the danger zone going with a tricky trip to Stoke to come next Tuesday. Scunthorpe's on-loan Manny Omoyimni will be looking to hit the headlines for the right reason when The Iron travel to Boundary Park. The West Ham youngster has hit the back pages for all the wrong reasons after his infamous role in the West Ham/Aston Villa Worthington Cup affair last week. But with all the fuss behind him the frontman links up with former Hammers player Lee Hodges for the Boxing day clash. Omoyimni could be drafted straight into the side for the meeting with the Latics.

OMOYINMI SET FOR IRON DEBUT
Scunthorpe United manager Brian Laws acknowledges that the Christmas and New Year holiday period will be crucial to the club's hopes of surviving in the second division this season. "Every game that we do not take something from now increases the pressure on us," he confessed. "To be honest, I am glad we are away on Boxing Day because I feel very confident of getting a result on our travels. "I just wish the players had the same confidence when it came to playing back here at Glanford Park. "They can't blame the crowd for getting on their backs because the supporters have been fantastic for us." United will welcome back striker Guy Ipoua and teenage midfield man Wayne Graves, both after one match suspensions, for the Boxing Day match at Oldham. Laws also hopes that the arrival of new loan signing Emmanuel Omoyinmi from West Ham will give his side a seasonal boost as they seek to halt a miserable run of just one point gained from the last 18. He is looking for the young Hammers star to put behind him the events of the past couple of weeks which have propelled him into the spotlight of the national media at the centre of West Ham's Worthington Cup controversy, in which he played as an ineligible player. "I feel for the lad because I know only too well what it is like to be under the spotlight like this," Laws said. "You get through it by gathering strength from the people closest around you. "I hope the players here can have a laugh and a joke about the situation, help take the pressure off him and let him get on with his football. "He seems a strong character and I just hope he gets left alone now to concentrate on playing for us." It will be the second time this season that Omoyinmi has made his debut for a club against Oldham. The first time was at the beginning of September for Gillingham when he made a sensational start, making one goal and scoring another all inside the opening six minutes to steer the Kent side to a 2-1 victory. United travel to Boundary Park to face an Oldham side recovering from their worst ever start to a new season. They lost all five of their opening games but have now climbed to 15th place in the table, three points better off than the Iron. But like Scunthorpe, they have struggled to find their best form at home, having lost five of their 10 outings there so far. Centre back Mark Hotte is ruled out tomorrow through a one match suspension, with rookie Paul Jones, a recent signing from Unibond side Leigh RMI, in contention for his full league debut. Oldham boss Andy Ritchie is also hoping to plunge into the transfer market again and has tabled a bid of £60,000 for Bury striker Ian Lawson — the man Brian Laws tried to bring to Glanford Park in the summer. Oldham's build-up for the Boxing Day game has been hit by a flu outbreak at Boundary Park which has affected both players and staff there.
