Beavers
poised to make loan switch
PAUL
BEAVERS is the highest profile of three Athletic strikers set to leave
Boundary Park on a frantic day of dealing as the transfer deadline looms. The
21-year-old was due to complete a move back to the North East to join third
division club Hartlepool on loan until the end of the season. Beavers,
signed on a free transfer from Sunderland early in the campaign, has failed
to hold down a regular first-team place. His
lack of progress has been a major disappointment following a successful
loan spell at the end of last season. Beavers was expected to be joined
at the exit door by David McNiven and Darren Wardle. McNiven
was due to join Nationwide Conference club Southport until the end of the
season while Wardle was expected to join Unibond League side Stalybridge
Celtic for the remainder of the campaign. Defender
Iain Swan, who can also leave on a free, joined Scottish side Partick Thistle
earlier this week. Manager Andy Ritchie has received several other inquiries
for the eight players he has on the transfer list. But he didn't anticipate
any incoming transfer activity unless somebody left permanently.
The
only new arrival has been Richard Dunning on loan from Blackburn until
the end of the season to provide extra defensive cover. Danish under-21
international Wasim El-Banna, a striker of Palestinian descent, has joined
Athletic on trial.
The
20-year-old has been named in the squad for tonight's Manchester Senior
Cup tie against Manchester United at Boundary Park (7.0). Richard Graham,
who has recovered from a groin injury, gets a run out tonight. Reserves
(from): Miskelly, Dunning, Smith, Graham, Futcher, Thom, Boshell, Salt,
Tipton, Sugden, Walsh, Robertson, El-Banna, Allott, Gardiner, McLaughlin.
Athletic's
home match against Stoke has been brought forward to Tuesday, April 4. The
game was scheduled for April 15 but has been postponed as Stoke are involved
in the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield that weekend. The
home reserve-team match against Stoke, scheduled for April 4, has been
moved to Thursday, May 4. Athletic reserves play Burnley at Boundary Park
on Monday in the quarter-finals of the Pontins League Cup and travel to
Burnley next Wednesday for a reserve team league match.

Dane
and dusted
The Latics
have signed up Danish Under-21 international striker, Wasim El Bonna, on
non-contract terms until the end of the season. The 20-year-old plays for
Denmark's FC Dalum, and has been highly recommended to the Latics. Palestinian
born, he has now been named to take on Manchester United in the Manchester
Senior Cup at Boundary Park tonight. Loan-man, Richard Dunning, is also
expected to make his debut in that game.
Rovers
youngster to stay
19-year-old
Blackburn Rovers defender, Richard Dunning, has signed up for Oldham until
the end of the season. The former Ewood Park trainee has been released
by Graeme Souness, and he is hopeful that an impressive spell for Andy
Ritchie could eventually lead to a permanent deal. Dunning has spent the
last couple of weeks on trial at Boundary Park and has done enough, for
now at least, to remain at the club. Meanwhile, Paul Beavers has been released
until the end of the season by Ritchie in order for him to join Hartlepool
on-loan as has David McNiven who joins Conference side, Southport.
Defender
out for season
Neil
Adams could be out for the rest of the season as he attempts to come back
from a foot injury. The veteran midfielder has his foot in plaster, but
it is due to come off in a week, and only then will he know what his future
holds. He commented: "All I can do is see how it feels when it comes off.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be okay, but I had a similar
problem at Norwich last season and I know it can be anything up to 12 weeks.
"If the worse
comes to the worse, yes that would be it for the season." The player is
undoubtedly daunted by the prospect as he went on to say:
"It is all
very frustrating because I had been enjoying my football and I have been
pleased with my form this season."

OLE
AT OLDHAM
Oldham
Athletic could be forgiven for thinking they're up against the Norwegian
national team tonight. Viking internationals Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ronny
Johnsen have been named in the United team that will face the 'Latics in
the Manchester Senior Cup at Boundary Park tonight.
The
match is the first of a triple-header with Oldham, who come to The Cliff
early next month in the final group game of this year's competition. The
two teams have both already qualified for the final, which will be played
at Boundary Park. Along with Ole and Ronny, two future United stars, recently
returned from loan spells away from Old Trafford, are named in the starting
eleven. Alex Notman, who did well at Sheffield United, and John O'Shea,
who was rapidly making a name for himself on the south coast with Bournemouth,
both pull on a red shirt again tonight, in the match which kicks off at
7pm. It's a meaningless match, in that both teams are already through to
the season's finale. But any match that pits United against local opposition
will be a blood and thunder affair.
United
squad: Culkin, Racubka; Higginbotham, Wallwork, Johnsen, Teather, O'Shea,
Roche; Greening, Wilson, Stewart, Cosgrove, Evans; Solskjaer, Notman.

JOHNSEN
SURVIVES COMEBACK TEST
Ronny Johnsen
continued his comeback from injury on Thursday night when he played for
Manchester United reserves in their 2-1 victory over Oldham. Johnsen came
through the Manchester Senior Cup tie at Boundary Park, which was his second
game back, without any problem and is now close to making a first-team
return. The Norwegian international defender has not played a senior match
since the Champions League Final in May after he had surgery on both knees
in August.Matt Tipton gave Oldham an early lead before Ronnie Wallwork
and Alex Notman hit back to clinch victory for United.
ESPN Soccernet Oldham
have taken Defender Richard Dunning on loan to with a view to taking the
player on when his Rovers contract expires at the end of the season.
Dunning is available for the trip to Glanford Park but Ritchie has let
David McNiven (free) and Paul Beavers (loan) leave the club - to Southport
and Hartlepool respectively. The Latics will look to build on the excellent
midweek win at Colchester and Ritchie said: "It was a big win for us in
midweek after a disappointing run and got us back on track." Scunthorpe
manager Brian Laws must wait on the fitness of Steve Housham before naming
his side to face Oldham. Lee Hodges could be set to return to the side
as The Iron look to build on the midweek draw with Brentford. Laws said:
"Every game is getting bigger by the week and we've just got to go for
it. "We may have to take a few chances but we need the three points."
