Sports sites the board rejected
LAND in Hollinwood and Failsworth was considered as the site a newly-built dual-use stadium for the town, it has been revealed. Members of the stadium company studied sites at the Failsworth end of Broadway, and the Lime Mill area of Hollinwood, to build an all-seater ground. But they decided both areas were too close to the Commonwealth Games complex, and future home of Premiership club Manchester City, to take full advantage of conference and banqueting opportunities. The six-man board — three from the Council and three from Oldham Athletic — decided that redeveloping Latics' current home, Boundary Park, was the best option.

The process has been made public in the agenda of Monday night's Policy and Resources Committee, where councillors will be asked to agree that plans to develop Clayton playing fields should be abandoned, in favour of redeveloping Boundary Park as a home for Athletic and the rugby club. The site at Broadway was identified as substantial and more than adequate to accommodate the proposed stadium and ancillary facilities, in the report by Director of Economic Development, Keith Coates. The majority of it is owned by the Council, but a key part is in private ownership, although the sale would not have been a problem. But re-locating the existing playing fields would have cost up to £1 million, and the distance from Boundary Park was likely to upset supporters of both clubs.

The Hollinwood option, bordered by Albert Street and Roman Road, was said to tight, but usable once the gas holder was demolished. It boasted excellent transport links, but council officers warned three acres of privately-owned land which would be required would be difficult to buy, with additional ground treatment works building up to a £2 million price tag. There are now alternative plans to develop the site —which is in an area where grant aid can be secured —as a flagship business park. Despite some access problems, the need to construct a new pitch, and potential planning problems with facilities involving late night use, Boundary Park was the unanimous favourite. The board will now press ahead immediately with the development arrangements.

Ritchie will register

Andy Ritchie will register as a player again next season but the boss admitted that he couldn't see himself getting a game! He said: "We are hoping to cut the size of our squad to around 25 professional so should we be badly hit by injuries I may be needed. "I still train with the lads every day, but not to the same intensity so there is no way I could sustain any run of games. I have also had problems with my back which wouldn't stand up to playing regularly. My future is now in management and not being out there on the pitch."

All quiet on transfer front

All remains quiet on the transfer front at the moment although Andy Ritchie has said that "the team does need strengthening." However, it is no secret that the boss is somewhat stuck at the moment as he knows he needs to sell before he can buy so any transfer activity will have to be sparked by players leaving which doesn't seem ready to happen just yet. The boss confirmed: "So far there is no sign of that happening but that could all change over the next few weeks."
