ESPN Soccernet Andy Payton took centre stage as Burnley recorded their first win of the century to end a run of three games without victory. Payton scored twice to take his season's tally to 16 while his strike partner Andy Cooke also got in on the act as Burnley brushed aside Lancashire rivals Oldham. Cooke's classic header opened the way on 24 minutes and although Oldham had chances late in the first half Burnley dominated after the break. Payton scored his first after good work by substitute John Mullin on 62 minutes and made the game safe 10 minutes from time with a cool finish after Mullin had again created the opening. Payton may well have had a hat-trick, only a desperate goal-line clearance from Mark Hotte preventing him finishing in style but the striker could still look back with immense satisfaction on another outstanding performance. Oldham, despite forcing no fewer than 12 corners, rarely threatened although Lee Duxbury wasn't too far away with a shot from distance.

Aussie trialist latest

The Aussie trialists Antoniou and Mihalopoulos are preparing to start their two week long trial at Boundary park. They arrived on Friday having had to pay their own flying expenses to come to England after they had apparently been told that they should contact the Latics first if they were keen on a trial in the UK. Konstandinos Antoniou is a 22 year old central defender and has been involved in the Young Soccaroo camps which was overlooked by coach Raul Blanco. Peter Mihalopoulos is two years younger and is described as an attacking midfielder come central striker. Both players hold Greek passports and so the club have been told that there will be no problems gaining a work permit and so the serious stuff begins for them bright and early tomorrow morning. We'll let you know how they get on.

Allott's absence all too evident

Oldham had no answer to Andy Payton's brace and Andy Cooke's opener as they failed to maintain their improved recent run at Turf Moor. They say too many cooks spoil the broth but the same could not be said today of Burnley who opened the scoring courtesy of a powerfully headed goal by Andy Cooke following a Paul Cook free-kick. It was Cook's first goal since the 23rd October and once he reacquired his taste for scoring he almost added a second minutes later but this time Gary Kelly was equal to it. The early indications were ominous for Oldham. The game was no older than six minutes when Graham Branch was sent clear through the inside left channel. Branch was caught in two minds between shooting and crossing and in the end did neither before being dispossessed. Andy Payton then evoked memories of Euro '96 with a 'Gascoigne-esque' juggle on the edge of the Oldham area but fortunately for Oldham, there were no 'dentist-chair' celebrations to follow. Oldham forced seven corners in the opening half with Shaun Garrett, returning from a calf injury, heading just wide from one of them as the match approached half-time. The second half started in much the same manner as the first half did and it soon became apparent it would be a matter of when Burnley would score their second. Appropriately, that honour fell to Andy Payton with his fiftieth Burnley goal, a goal of utter simplicity. Chrichton's goal-kick was headed on by Lenny Johnrose before Payton cheekily drew in Kelly to nonchalantly slide the ball home. The absence of Mark Allott was clearly evident today and Burnley's third goal was a direct result of Oldham pushing men forward in search of a way back into this game. In so doing they only served to provide Burnley with a counter attacking move, again featuring Johnrose, this time the creator, and again finished by Payton.

Sporting Life Weekend review Wigan and Bristol City emerged with their unbeaten records intact after Saturday's 0-0 draw at Ashton Gate, City's 11th home draw of the season. Wigan stay on top, but only by goal difference after Bristol Rovers thrashed Oxford 5-0 to maintain the best away record in the division.

It was Rovers' eighth win on the road. Jamie Cureton provided a hat-trick with goals in the 30th, 56th and 80th minutes with Robbie Pethick (74) and Nathan Ellington (75) completing the scoring.

Preston stayed in third place but not without a few alarms against Wycombe, who led through Matthew Brady's fifth-minute goal. Colin Murdock equalised after 34 minutes and Jonathan Macken put the North Enders in front on the half-time whistle. But Wycombe would not lie down and Matt Lawrence pulled Wanderers level again in the 57th minute before Macken's 18th of the season gave a final scoreline of 3-2.

Michael Gilkes notched the only goal of the game to keep Millwall in the promotion hunt and steal a march over rivals Stoke in a 1-0 victory at the New Den while Andy Payton notched a hat-trick for Burnley in their 3-0 trouncing of Oldham.

Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren did the trick for Wrexham - his 74th-minute effort giving Brian Flynn's men a 2-1 win. Cardiff led through Joshua Low's 48th-minute goal and Karl Connolly equalised seven minutes later.

Trevor Benjamin's goals in the 44th and 66th minutes lifted Cambridge off the bottom of the table. They secured a 2-0 win over Chesterfield who took Cambridge's place at the basement.

Luton's 3-1 win left Reading without a victory in 14 games. Darren Caskey's effort on the hour equalised the opener by Julian Watts after 18 minutes but Liam George netted in the 69th and 90th minutes to seal an easy win.

Colchester eased away from the danger zone with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. Jamie Moralee put United in front after 33 minutes and Stephen Robinson equalised two minutes later but Lomano Lua-Lua netted a brace in the 69th and 83rd minutes as Colchester finished strongly.

Steve McMahon tasted his first victory as Blackpool manager when the Seasiders beat Gillingham 3-1 at Priestfield. Kevin Richardson (43), Steve Bushell (45) and Robert Matthews (48) gave Blackpool a 3-0 lead before Nicky Southall pulled one back.

Brentford scored their first goals in four games against Bury at Griffin Park. Andy Scott fired them ahead five minutes into the second half and Martin Rowlands grabbed a second in the 56th minute. It ended 2-1, Ian Lawson pulling one back eight minutes from time.

Guy Ipoua's goal in the 19th minute was enough to give Scunthorpe a 1-0 win over Notts County.
