Dudley returns to stake call-up claim

ENGLAND under-20 striker Craig Dudley is back in the reckoning for Athletic and ready to push his claims for a first senior call-up. Dudley returned this week from a loan spell at Chesterfield and will play for Athletic's reserves against Stockport tonight. Boundary Park boss Andy Ritchie was surprised and disappointed that his deadline-day signing was given hardly any first-team football during his month at Saltergate.

The 20-year-old was an unused substitute on five occasions, being brought on for five minutes in another game and only two minutes against Reading on Saturday. When he was loaned out, Ritchie said the intention was to "toughen him up" in preparation for second division action. Chesterfield manager John Duncan may not have granted that wish, but he was certainly impressed by what he saw. Duncan said: "He is someone I would have very much liked to keep around, but Oldham wanted him back.

"He is definitely a player I will be keeping my eye on because, if we had the chance to work on him, I'm sure there's something there." Dudley played for Notts County at the age of 17 but was allowed to leave for a small fee after the Meadow Lane club signed four forwards at the start of the year. He immediately went to Nigeria to play in an international tournament for England and couldn't force his way into Ritchie's plans after returning near the end of the season.

With Athletic bottom of the table, the manager is on the look-out for new options to boost his side's form and fortunes. An impressive display tonight would give Dudley, who can play either through the middle or wide on the right, every chance of making the squad for Saturday's game at Reading. Stuart Thom will also play a part in the Pontins League Cup match at Boundary Park (7pm) as he continues his comeback from a broken toe. Richard Graham is given another run-out, but goalkeeper David Miskelly is ruled out through injury.

Reserves (from): Campbell, Clitheroe, McLean, Thom, Hotte, Swan, Futcher, Graham, Innes, Dudley, D McNiven, Sugden, Boshell, Wharton, Wardle, Mohan.

Reserves in action
The Latics reserves are in action tonight when they take on Stockport at home in the Pontins League Cup. Andy Ritchie has decided to use the game to give Stuart Thom a run out, and sharpen up his fitness levels, following his recovery from a broken toe. Richard Graham also continues his comeback and Craig Dudley, back from his loan spell at Chesterfield will also be given a run out.

Sheridan's new target

John Sheridan's career has spanned World Cups, Wembley finals and more than 600 matches, and he's now chasing another milestone of 100 goals. The beauty he scored at Bristol Rovers on Saturday, was his 93rd so he's got seven to go and he is hoping that a few more this season will help the Latics start to climb the table. He said:"Everyone looks at the league tables and nobody wants to see themselves at the bottom of the pile. When you're winning everyone has a great weekend, but if you lose, everything is a bit down." He went on to say: "There are young lads at Boundary Park with the ability to go a long way in the game and we all have to keep battling. Little things aren't going our way at the moment, but we are getting on the right wavelength and as a team we are becoming more organised."
