Today's Headlines

Sport.com Garry Hughes showed his strikers the way forward by bagging a memorable late winner, the first senior goal for the young defender. Hughes struck 10 minutes from time when this division two contest looked to be heading for deadlock, which would have meant a sixth straight league draw between these sides. But the 20-year-old Hughes, who almost missed the game after suffering from sickness on Friday, struck with a sweet right foot drive from the edge of the box after a Steve Howard cross had only been partially cleared. Delighted Northampton boss Kevin Wilson quipped: "Garry is going in on Monday to show the strikers how to do it. He rang me at 10 o'clock last night to say he was suffering from sickness but there was no sign of anything lethargic about him today. "He has been given his chance with Ian Hendon's move to Sheffield Wednesday and taken it with both hands." Wilson was a little disturbed by Northampton's cavalier approach after half-time when they should have killed the match off.

Both goalkeepers Keith Welch and Gary Kelly were outstanding throughout, but Kelly excelled himself in the minutes after the restart by pulling off breathtaking stops from Marco Gabbiadini and twice from Dave Savage, while John Hodge ended a mazy 30-yard dribble through the visitors defence by shooting straight at the well-positioned Kelly. Oldham, who had spurned enough chances in the first half to be over the horizon themselves, responded by cancelling out Jamie Forrester's first half strike in a somewhat fortunate manner. They counterattacked in the 65th minute and when Craig Dudley drove in a low cross, the unfortunate Richard Green tucked the ball into his own net after sliding in to attempt a clearance. Forrester's eighth goal of the season had opened things up in the 25th minute and Green had a happier part to play in this goal. When Chris Hargreaves delivered a corner to the back post, it was Green's thumping header which forced Kelly into another great save, but the ball squirmed loose and Forrester picked up the pieces.

Oldham's best efforts fell to Dudley, even though the anticipation was for his co-striker Carlo Corazzin, on his return to the club which he left last season. Dudley showed great pace and directness, but despite going through on Welch five times during the match he was unable to add to the three goals he had scored in the past week. That was something else which relieved home boss Wilson who added: "We caused all our own problems by not killing off Oldham. I thought we were cavalier at times."

Latics fall despite Dudley's effort
The Latics are back in the bottom four after Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Northampton. They fell behind after 26 minutes but levelled 20 minutes into the second half when an effort from Craig Dudley was deflected into the net. Andy Ritchie's strugglers looked as though they might hold out for a draw but Northampton, unbeaten at home, grabbed the winner with nine minutes to go.
Once again it was the same old story, a catalogue of missed chances. Apart from Dudley, no one is taking scoring responsibilities. The exciting young prospect has four in three games after being recalled into the side. He said: "Strikers are judged on goals they get and I'm just hoping my goals will help me stay in the team. "I had been used as a right wing back earlier in the season but didn't really enjoy it. I have now been moved in to the middle as a central striker and fortunately I have started scoring again. "I was determined to take my chance when I got back into the side and I want to make it hard for the gaffer to leave me out again."

Sporting Life weekend review The pacesetters in Division Two all came unstuck on Saturday to leave the top end of the table with a 'same again' look.

Leaders Walsall went down 3-1 at Wycombe where Andy Rammell bagged a brace against his old club after Michael Simpson's opener. Darren Wrack replied for the sad Saddlers.

Reading, with four wins in their previous five games, crashed 4-0 at Bristol City. Lee Peacock (2), Scott Murray and Mickey Bell scored to set up a first home win of the season for Danny Wilson's City side.

Bury lost for the third successive game, albeit in surprising fashion. They went down 5-2 at Gigg Lane to Bournemouth - who won for the first time in eight games.

James Hayter, with only five previous goals in his career, found the target four times after Claus Jorgensen's opener. Steve Redmond and player-boss Andy Preece (penalty) replied for the Shakers.

Neil Harris netted the fastest goal of the day when he put Millwall in front at Stoke after only 20 seconds but Peter Thorne hit back with a brace for the Potters.

Harris made it 11 for the season a minute before the break but the Lions' hopes of earning a point were snuffed out in the last minute when Chris Iwelumo's winner for Stoke ended a run of six games without defeat.

High-flying Cambridge also bit the dust, losing 2-0 to Colchester. Steve McGavin bagged both to set up their first win in nine starts, after Cambridge's Tom Cowan had been dismissed for violent conduct.

Wigan jumped to third in the table with Andy Liddell's 76th-minute goal bringing a 1-0 win over Port Vale - who suffered a fourth successive away defeat.

Rotherham moved up four places after their 3-1 win over bottom of the table Oxford, two goals from Paul Warne and one from Kevin Watson sealing the win, with only Derek Lilley's late goal any consolation for United.

Northampton also made ground with Jamie Forrester's eighth goal of the season putting them on the road to a 2-1 win over Oldham. Craig Dudley's levelled for the Lancashire lads with his third goal in two games before Garry Hughes grabbed the points for the Cobblers.

Luton won for the first time in 11 games when two from Stuart Douglas and a Matthew Spring penalty put them three up after only 36 minutes against Brentford. Andy Scott's ninth of the season made it 3-1.

Andy Clarke's solo effort after 69 minutes was enough to give Peterborough a 1-0 win over Notts County and Chris Killen, on loan from Manchester City, settled the Welsh derby by giving Wrexham a 1-0 win over Swansea - who had Michael Howard sent off for a second bookable offence in the last minute.

Bristol Rovers ended a run of four games without a win with a 3-1 victory at Swindon. Marcus Andreasson, an own goal from Martin Williams and a Micky Evans penalty put the Pirates three up after 27 minutes - Mark Robertson's reply from the penalty spot was little consolation for the home side.
