Oldham lived dangerously near the end but held on for a 1-0 victory over Swansea which put them into the FA Cup third round draw for a second successive season. Once again, Steve Whitehall was the Latics hero with his fourth goal in six games. The veteran striker rose above the Swansea defence to head home the winner in the 45th minute. But Swansea went all out in search of an equaliser after the break but found the home side's keeper Gary Kelly in fine form. He brilliantly denied Johnathan Coates and Steve Watkin with superb saves and when he was beaten by a Julian Alsop header it was Whitehall who headed off the line.

Latics through to third round

Oldham are in the hat for the third round draw as Steve Whitehall scored a first half injury time header to beat Swansea. This was, to use a footballing phrase, a game of two halves. The first half was a dull affair with neither team able to take control and good chances were hard to come by. Lee Duxbury shot wide on 4 minutes and Steve Whitehall saw his effort go over the bar 8 minutes later. For Swansea Michael Howard hit the outside of the post midway through the half and Damien Lacey also had a shot blocked. It was well into injury time at the end of the first half when Steve Whitehall headed in to break the deadlock. The second half was a much better contest, with the Latics again looking the better side. Steve Whitehall went close again while Paul Rickers and Lee Duxbury saw their efforts sail wide and over the bar respectively. In the final quarter of an hour it was the Swans who piled on the pressure and shots rained in from all angles. Coates on 78 minutes and then Steve Watkin on 88 minutes both forced excellent saves from Kelly in the Oldham goal, but the Latics held on and will now have to wait and see if they draw one of the big premiership teams in the third round.
