Young
star leaves
Latics
defender Iain Swan has left Oldham for Partick Thistle of the Scottish
Second Division. The Glasgow-born player was handed a free transfer and
will stay with Partick for the rest of the season. Swan arrived at Boundary
Park as a 16-year-old and the highlight of his stay was coming on as a
sub in the FA cup game with Chelsea last season.
Boss
fumes at players
Andy Ritchie
has revealed that he had a real go at his players after the game against
Bristol City at the weekend. He said: "They didn't get a chance to say
a word, I wouldn't give them the chance. "Bristol shouldn't have been in
the game at the break but we wasted far too many chances. But after we
scored, apart from a 10-minute-spell, they had the rest of the game. "We
just didn't play with any confidence and we were very grateful to Gary
Kelly who made several good saves.
"In the end
we got out of jail, but only just."
Boss
with selection dilemma
Boss Andy
Ritchie has a tough decision to make before the game against Colchester
on Tuesday, does he play Mark Allott? The 11-goal star is currently on
the transfer list and came off the bench on Saturday for the final five
minutes after returning from a hamstring injury. Ritchie wants to sell
the player to get some money in before the transfer deadline and playing
him would be a good chance to put him in the shop window.

Don't
write us off
DON’T
write off Bristol City’s hopes of a last gasp bid to snatch a play-off
place. That’s the defiant message from big defender Andrew Jordan. It may
be too much to hope for but the Robins can count themselves unlucky not
to have left Boundary Park with all three points. They certainly didn’t
look like a side which had gone into the game on the back of three successive
defeats. Oldham, who had won only one of their previous eight league games,
owed much to veteran keeper Gary Kelly. The Republic of Ireland stopper
made several fine saves late on as City upped the pace to give the home
side a bit of a battering. Even relieved manager Andy Ritchie admitted:
“We got out jail. “We didn’t play with any confidence and we knocked balls
to people in all the wrong areas.” City were full of running and Oldham
escaped a mauling because the visitors couldn’t find a finish. Jordan,
who was playing only his second game of the season, said: “We expected
Oldham to pass it about but they used the long ball. It was certainly a
shock for us in the first 20 minutes.”The
20-year-old son of former City boss Joe Jordan added: “We had a lot of
young players out there but we coped well and nobody let the side down.
“Hopefully we can kick off from here. The play-offs are still a goal to
aim for and we shouldn’t be written off.” City, who go to Wembley next
month in the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield, fell behind just 20
seconds into the second half. Jordan thought he had cleared a cross which
was going wide but it was deflected into the net by Oldham striker Steve
Whitehall. But the youngster atoned for that when he set up the equalising
goal. A superbly-flighted long ball down the middle badly exposed Oldham’s
cover and left Aaron Brown with time and space to pick his spot 14 minutes
from the end. Jordan added: “If we can keep playing like that it can help
us to get into our best form for Wembley.”

U's
looking to sink Latics
|
| Colchester
entertain Oldham at Layer Road looking to complete a double on their northern
opponents. Boss Steve Whitton has a full squad to choose from apart from
his two long-term injuries. Richard Wilkins will see a specialist again
this week following the recurrence of his neck problem. And Joe Dunne is
again ruled out with his troublesome foot injury, but could be back in
contention in the next week or so. Athletic manager Andy Ritchie must decide
whether to recall transfer-listed striker Mark Allott for the long trip
to Layer Road. Allott came on for the last five minutes as the Latics fought
out a 1-1 draw against Bristol City on Saturday and may be placed in the
shop window ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline. But Ritchie may choose
to keep faith in the partnership of Craig Dudley and Steve Whitehall, the
latter who claimed Saturday's equaliser against the Robins. Richard Graham
is also in contention for a return to the starting line-up after being
a substitute at the weekend. |
