Today's Headlines

Michael Yarwood of the Oldham Evening Chronicle writes, PAUL BEAVERS will be left out of Athletic's reserve-team match tonight due to his continuing lack of fitness. The 20-year-old target man remains worryingly short of peak condition, even though he has had almost a month of full training at Boundary Park. When Beavers arrived on a free transfer from Sunderland, Andy Ritchie hoped he would be ready for regular football after a couple of warm-up games. He had been given only seven minutes of action in the Wearsiders' pre-season friendlies but looked trimmer than during his loan spell with Athletic in April and May. Since then, progress has been slow and only once - in last week's reserve game against Manchester City - has Beavers looked near his best. Ritchie admitted: "He says he doesn't feel right and, to us, he doesn't look right either. "He was super in the reserves last week, but he isn't as sharp in training as he could be. "It's nothing specific - just a general lack of sharpness and fitness - but it's getting him down a bit. "I thought he could have had a couple of goals when he came on at Oxford on Saturday, and that shows the difference. "Although there is a chance he'll be involved tonight, I think he needs a couple more training sessions." Heading in the opposite direction in the fitness stakes is Steve Whitehall, who is expected to play for about an hour against Wolves at Boundary Park in the first home Pontins League game of the season (7 PM). Whitehall is pencilled in for a first-team return at Glllingham on Saturday, while fellow striker Matthew Tipton also has the chance to press his claims. Ryan Sugden, who played for the youth team on Saturday, is given a rest.Reserves (probable): Mohan, Tait, McLean, Futcher, Hotte, Swan, Clitheroe, Boshell, Walsh, Tipton, Whitehall. Subs: Wharton, Campbell, Wardle, Gardner, McLaughlin.

Whitehall to stake a claim

Steve Whitehall continues his comeback in Wednesday's reserve game against Wolves, and his prize if unscathed could be a first team recall. The 32 year old hasn't been in senior action since April after undergoing surgery for ankle damage, and if he comes through Wednesday's game he's expected to be promoted into the first team squad. Whitehall is around 90 % fit, and Ritchie wants him to inject some new life into a Latics attack that's scored just one goal in six games.
Andy Ritchie is planning to give the striker a one hour run out, having already coming through two reserve team outings. Kick off tonight at Boundary Park is at 7pm.

Ritchie on striker return
Andy Ritchie has revealed that he's looking for Steve Whitehall to be involved on Saturday, but that he won't be guaranteed a start.
Ritchie said: "Steve's not guaranteed a start, but we do need him back in the side. His experience will be a big help because it's difficult having to many young players up front." He added: "I am also hoping he will be the one to put away the chances we have been creating."
Gills without duo

Gillingham will be without key duo Anthony William's and Brian McGlinchey for Saturday's game at the Priestfield Stadium. Keeper Williams is on Under 21 duty with Wales, who play Belarus on Friday, and that means that former Arsenal man Vince Bartram will be in goal. Meanwhile McGlinchey, who scored last weekend in their 2-2 draw with Wycombe, is in the Northern Ireland Under 21 set up to face Turkey.

Gillingham preview from the official Gillingham Web site With both teams finishing at different ends of the table last season this game was expected to be a walk in the part for Gillingham.  After beating Oldham 4-0 at Boundary Park in the closing weeks of last season, Gillingham should have the upper hand in this game.  Dispite last seasons records, both teams have had a bad start to the 1999/2000 campaign.  Oldham are the only team in Division Two not to score a goal in a league match, and find themselves bottom of the table with no points and a goal difference of minus 5.  Gillingham's form is improving after going three games unbeaten.  Their last two league games have been draws against Wycombe and Stoke, the Gills fans will be hoping that the Kent side can capitalise on Oldham's poor start to the season and pick up the clubs first win of the season.  Gillingham will be without goalkeeper Anthony Williams and Left-Back Barry McGlinchey for this match, as they have both been called up to play for their countries.  Long-Term injury to Carl Asaba, Marcus Browning, Jim Stannard and Neil Masters prevent them from taking part.
