Three
more listed in Latics clear-out
ATHLETIC
dropped another transfer bombshell today by listing three more first-team
players —Mark Innes, Matthew Tipton and Paul Beavers. They
hope to sell the youngsters before this month's transfer deadline, slashing
the wage bill and making room for new signings. After
an operating loss of £1million last year, the Boundary Park club
have spent several months trying to sell off their fringe players. Innes,
Tipton and Beavers are the latest victims of that no-nonsense approach,
with Athletic claiming their careers have ground to a halt. Manager
Andy Ritchie said: "All three have shown good promise and I really believe
they have good futures in the game. "But there comes a time when a change
is beneficial — it happened to me and I never looked back."
Athletic
now have eight men on the transfer list and, earlier in the season, terminated
the contracts of five more. Mark Allott
and Scott McNiven were put on the list after refusing new deals, while
Ian McLean, David McNiven and Iain Swan can all go for free. Athletic
could rake in around £50,000 each for midfielder Innes (21) and striker
Tipton (19). But they would be lucky to get a fee for Beavers, the 21-year-old
centre-forward signed for nothing at the start of the season. Beavers
was the number-one summer target after helping Athletic beat the drop while
on loan from Sunderland. He has since
been plagued by injury and has made only three senior starts. Tipton —
a Welsh under-21 international at the age of 17 — was always a prolific
marksman in Athletic's junior sides. He has failed to carry that form into
the first team, scoring twice in 54 league appearances, over half of them
as a substitute.
The
surprise cast-off is Innes, who began the campaign as the club's latest
jewel in the crown. The Scot emerged as a key figure in the relegation
battle and looked destined for greater heights. Yet
his form has slumped and Athletic believe youngsters like Danny Boshell
and Phil Salt have a brighter future at Boundary Park. Beavers
was under contract until 2001, Innes to 2002 and Tipton to 2003. Chief
executive Alan Hardy said: "We are working to keep the club on an even
keel, while trying to become more competitive and plan for the future. "Our
decision does not reflect the players' ability but our current staffing
levels and wider responsibilities as employers. "We believe it will be
of great benefit to them to kick-start their careers elsewhere and, if
we can bring in some funds, this will help Andy strengthen the side in
other areas."

Three
youth stars listed
The Latics
have transfer-listed three of their brightest young stars - Mark Innes,
Matthew Tipton and Paul Beavers. Boss Andy Ritchie has seen their careers
stall in the last twelve months and reckons a change of club will do them
good. He explained: "All three have shown good promise and I really believe
they have good futures in the game. "But there comes a time when a change
is beneficial; it happened to me and I never looked back." Great things
were expected of 21-year-old Innes after starring in midfield towards the
end of last season, while Tipton has scored at every level for the club.
Beavers, who is 21, joined in the close season on a free transfer from
Sunderland, but his short Latics career has been blighted by injuries.
The Latics currently have 33 professionals and already have five other
players - Mark Allott, Iain Swan, Ian McLean and the McNiven twins - on
the list. It is hoped that by pruning the staff they can raise funds for
Ritchie to sign a striker. Chief Executive Alan Hardy confirmed the club's
difficult financial position - they lost one million pounds last season
- and said: "We are working hard to keep on an even keel, while trying
to become more competitive and plan for the future. "We have to be realistic
in all our dealings and we believe what we are doing is in the best interests
of the club and of the players involved. "Our decision does not reflect
on their ability, but on our current staffing levels and our wider responsibilities
as responsible employers. "We believe it will be of great benefit to the
players to kick start their careers elsewhere and, if we can bring in some
funds, then this will help the manager strengthen the side in other areas."
Adams
injury blow
The Latics
have received news that Neil Adams will miss at least the next month of
the season through injury. Adams has had surgery to remove a screw from
his left foot after aggravating an old injury in the game against Bristol
Rovers last weekend. He picked up the original injury 18 months ago when
he was playing for Norwich. Fortunately, there is no further break but
the surgery nonetheless means at least four weeks of inactivity for 34-year-old
Adams.
Boss'
selection headache
Manager Andy
Ritchie's team selection for Saturday's derby game with Bury will be hit
by suspensions and injuries. Mark Hotte, Lee Duxbury and Matthew Tipton
will be missing through suspension, and Neil Adams is out injured. Although
John Sheridan made a welcome return to the first team last Saturday, Ritchie
will have to make changes in midfield and defence to cover the loss of
the suspended trio. Paul Jones is the favourite to take over from Mark
Hotte. If Paul Rickers moves to the right of midfield to cover for Adams'
absence, young Danny Boshell may get his chance in midfield.
Pitch
problems
Tuesday
night's reserve game against Grimsby Town was postponed due to a waterlogged
pitch, and Latics officials are becoming increasingly unhappy with the
poor drainage at Boundary Park. Large areas of standing water following
heavy overnight rain meant that the game was unplayable. It is believed
that specialists from the company Professional Sportsturf Design have visited
Boundary Park to inspect the pitch, with a view to taking action in the
close season to solve the drainage problem. Teamtalk

Pre-season
tournament arranged
The Shakers
will team up with Stoke City, Burnley, Darlington, and local rivals Oldham
in a pre-season tournament in the Isle of Man. The rather long-winded title
of the Steam Packet Company International Football Festival will take place
between July 23rd to 29th.
