Striker McNiven a target for Halifax
DAVID McNiven — handed a free transfer after failing to make his mark with Athletic — has emerged as a target for Halifax Town. The third division side have made an inquiry about the striker and had a scout at Boundary Park last night to watch him play for the reserves. McNiven scored in his last senior appearance for Athletic, but he is one of the players Andy Ritchie feels able to release from the wage bill. Although Halifax have made a decent start to the season, they want to boost their promotion challenge with a new face up front. The Yorkshire club smashed their transfer record to buy Chris Tate for £150,000 during the summer, but the former Scarborough man has not delivered.

After selling Geoff Horsfield to Fulham last season, they became their division's big spenders and would probably be able to match McNiven's personal demands. One complication, however, is the boardroom situation at The Shay. An injection of new money has been expected for some time, but it still has not been forthcoming. Halifax are currently being linked with a takeover by Cilla Black's brother-in-law. Athletic will play at Preston in the FA Cup third round after the Lilywhites' 3-0 replay win against non-league Enfield. Last night's result means the Lancashire rivals, who play each other in the league on Saturday, will meet at Deepdale twice in the space of a week. Any cup replay would take place at Boundary Park on Wednesday, December 22 — a date agreed by both clubs to give them a chance of featuring in a live Sky Television match.
