BRISTOL ROVERS 3 OLDHAM ATHLETIC 2
Jamie Cureton's double kept Rovers flying high in an entertaining game. John Sheridan's third-minute free kick gave Oldham the lead and Neil Adams missed a penalty for the visitors before Cureton headed a 26-minute equaliser. Steve Foster nodded Rovers in front on the half hour and after Cureton's 60th minute header, Mark Allott's volley 20 minutes from time proved no more than a consolation for Oldham. The match was played in high wind and driving rain, but that only added to the excitement as Rovers were denied by the woodwork no fewer than four times. The first half was packed with action as Oldham defended poorly, but had enough ability going forward to make it an uncomfortable afternoon for Ian Holloway's highly-rated side.

Good start turns sour

Oldham took the lead and missed a penalty in today's game, but still managed to lose 3-2 in their trip to Bristol Rovers. The Latics effectively shot themselves in the foot, and had a win in the palm of their hands before being punished by Rovers. Oldham opened up the scoring after only three minutes, a John Sheridan free-kick caught Jones napping and the ball was in the back of the net before he had chance to move. On 20 minutes the points could have been sown up, Adams was given a penalty following a foul by Mauge, but Jones stood up well and paid off his earlier mistake. From then on the home side took over, on 26 minutes Jamie Cureton headed home from a Thompson cross to make in 1-1, and four minutes later a free kick saw Stephen Foster finding the back of the net to give Rovers the lead. In the second half Oldham's misery was compounded further when Cureton grabbed his second on the hour, and it looked as if Oldham were without a chance of a point, never mind the three that they would have expected if they had taken the penalty. Still, Allott revived some faith with 20 minutes to go when he rifled the ball home through a melee of players following a corner and a fight back looked on the cards. In the end it wasn't to be though as Bristol closed down the shop in the final stages, Oldham being left to stare up once more from the bottom of the table. The Latics started well enough in this game, but were guilty of not taking their chances, any more of the same will lead to a tough battle come the end of the season.

Bristol Rovers 3 Oldham 2Oldham squandered their early lead from the game's first free-kick. John Sheridan's 40-yard blast caught keeper Lee Jones cold. But he saved a Neil Adams penalty before Rovers surged ahead and hit the woodwork twice. Two goals in four minutes undid Oldham: a glancing header by Jamie Cureton and Steve Foster's free-kick flick-on. When Cureton made it 3-1 it should have been curtains for Oldham, but Mark Allott struck to make it a tense finish.
