The
game needed a goal, and it got one after 20 seconds of the second half.
The source was a long throw from Andrew Holt which Lee Duxbury helped across
the six-yard box. It landed at the feet of Whitehall who stuck out a boot
to deflect in his tenth goal of the season in a challenge with Jordan.
Only a brave block from Shaun Garnett protected Oldham's lead as the visitors
stormed back. Scott Murray squandered a chance after dancing clear of two
tackles but the influential Sheridan again forced Phillips into action
at the other end before Thorpe's fierce shot was clawed away by Kelly.
City however, grabbed their deserved equaliser on 76 minutes when Aaron
Brown ran onto a searching long pass from Jordan. The ball eluded Mark
Hotte's attempted clearance and the midfielder side-footed neatly beyond
Kelly from 12 yards. Kelly made a terrific reaction save from Thorpe as
the Latics' defence lost its composure in front of him. Peter Beadle almost
exploited their uncertainty, only to be denied by Kelly, while Thorpe -
yet again - failed badly when presented with a clear sight of goal.

A free kick was floated into the box and Andrew Jordan - son of former Scottish international Joe - was just wide with a header from eight yards out. Oldham began to step up the pace but couldn't find the final penetration until Whitehall's strike. It signalled more aggression from the home side and the Bristol defence was suddenly working overtime. But, as ever, Oldham still continued to miss the chances that would have buried the visitors. Bristol began to chase the game midway through the second half and push Oldham on the back foot. It almost paid off in the 51st minute when Thorpe had a shot blocked by Garnett. But it was Oldham who were out of luck in the 65th minute when keeper Phillips pulled off a fine save to deny another superb Sheridan free kick from the edge of the box. Bristol had another escape in the 71st minute when a powerful shot from McNiven was cleared off the line then Hotte had a shot saved as Andy Ritchie's side went in search of further good fortune.
ESPN Soccernet Oldham and Bristol City both squandered chances and in the end neither could argue about coming away from this game with a point apiece. Oldham, with only one win in their previous eight league games, struck first at Boundary Park. They went in front 20 seconds into the second half when Steve Whitehall deflected a shot into the net from Lee Duxbury for his 10th goal of the season. But the Robins ended a run of three defeats in a row when they equalised through Aaron Brown 14 minutes from the end. The two keepers were kept busy after the break as both sides went in search of the winner but in the end justice prevailed and the points were shared.
Iain Anderson kept Preston in top spot after scoring the only goal at Deepdale against Luton.
Bristol Rovers kept on their tails with a 3-1 win over bottom club Chesterfield - Mark Walters and Jamie Cureton scoring either side of Ryan Williams' goal for the Spireites. Vitalijs Astafjevs added the third.
Third-placed Millwall dropped two points against relegation-threatened Blackpool and now lie seven points behind Rovers, having played a game more.
It took a Neil Harris penalty seconds before half-time to cancel out Wayne Gill's opener for the visitors.
Former England striker Ian Wright capped a Burnley win - which keeps them in the play-off zone - with the Clarets' final goal in a 3-0 win over Reading, after captain Steve David and top scorer Andy Payton had netted.
Gillingham kept in touch with the chasing pack after coming from behind at home to Scunthorpe. Paul Harsley shot the Iron in front only for Junior Lewis, Andy Thomson and a Nicky Southall penalty to seal the win.
Andy Liddell helped fourth-placed Wigan to a 1-0 win over Greater Manchester rivals Bury at the JJB Stadium.
Play-off hopefuls Stoke were stunned by a Jermaine McSporran goal for Wycombe in the first half at the Britannia Stadium, and it needed a penalty from Arnar Gunnlaugsson, on loan from Leicester, to steal a point.
Notts County won 3-2 at struggling Oxford with Andy Hughes' double after Alex Dyer's opener proving too much as Paul Powell struck twice in reply.
At the other end of the table, Wrexham won a seven-goal thriller 4-3 at Cambridge to ease their relegation fears with goals from Danny Williams and Darren Ferguson and two from Kevin Russell.
Tom Youngs (2) and the highly-rated Trevor Benjamin scored for United, who remain precariously placed, one spot above the relegation zone.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth
won 2-0 at Brentford while the other mid-table clash between Oldham and
Bristol City finished 1-1.

City midfielder
Neil Redfearn has made a shock £112,000 switch to Second Division
promotion chasers Wigan Athletic. The 34-year-old has found himself surplus
to requirements at Valley Parade over recent weeks and has not started
a first-team game since the 2-0 away defeat to Sheffield Wednesday back
on January 22.
The deal represents
a loss for City with Redfearn joining the Bantams for £250,000 from
Charlton Athletic only last summer. The deal indicates that Jewell may
be ready to bring a new midfielder to the club to boost the relegation
fight ahead of transfer deadline day next Thursday.

17/03 - Renwick about turn
Hibs full-back
Michael Renwick did a u-turn today and decided not to join the Jags on
loan. Only two days ago he was looking forward to his move to Firhill,
but he has now returned to Easter Road. John Lambie moved quickly
to bring in another defender in his place, signing Ian Swan on loan from
Oldham. The 20-year-old has
limited experience and has only played once for the Oldham first-team this
season (Info added to the Player Profiles section). He could be added
to the squad for tomorrow's match with Hamilton along with Derek McWilliams,
but missing will be Derek Lyle (hand) and Brian Martin (wrist). Hamilton
will be without ex-Jag Nicky Henderson as he has been sold to Clyde, and
they have doubts over Quitongo, Ferguson and Hillcoat.
