Rickers fitness boost

Oldham midfielder Paul Rickers is recovering well from a double hernia operation and should be able to resume training next month. The 24-year-old is currently stepping up his fitness levels after having surgery just before the end of last season. He is now running well, on schedule to join the rest of the players when they report back for pre-season training and keener than ever to help bring the glory days back to Boundary Park. Rickers, who is a Leeds fan, insisted: "We have some very good young players like Andrew Holt, Mark Allott and Steve McNiven and I believe we have the potential to win promotion within the next couple of seasons.
"Once we get back into the First Division we can start thinking of the next step up. "Like every other footballer I would love to play in the Premiership." Rickers made his debut against Stoke in 1994 and has already notched up more than 200 appearances. He added: "I'm afraid we haven't had too much to shout about since I came into the side, but hopefully the good times and promotions will soon return."

Youth appointment soon

Oldham expect to reveal their new Director of Youth development later this week. They concluded their interviews on Monday when the final candidate on a short list of three was seen. The role involves all sections of youth development and is seen as one of the most important jobs at Boundary Park. Boss Andy Ritchie, who sat in on all the interviews said: "The applicants were all of a high quality, particularly the final three." The successful applicant's identity should be known in the next 48 hours.
