Latics
start with a win
ATHLETIC’S
pre-season build-up had its first major test yesterday with a tricky match
at Conference club Leigh RMI. Manager
Andy Ritchie named a full-strength side for the opening friendly and was
satisfied with the work-out in a 3-2 victory. Athletic went two up through
Lee Duxbury’s header and a good finish from Mark Allott, whose inclusion
was a hint that he remains the number-one striker despite playing on a
week-to-week contract.
Leigh
levelled the game just after half-time, but Steve Whitehall grabbed the
winner in the 55th minute with a header from Andrew Holt’s left-wing cross.
Ritchie said: “We didn’t defend particularly well early on and we also
started badly in the second half. “We
were more rusty than I expected, but these games aren’t about winning.
They are about getting fit and getting the system together, which we didn’t
do last night. But we haven’t managed to do much team play in training
yet.”
Athletic’s
starting line-up was: Kelly, Jones, Garnett, Hotte, Adams, Holt, Duxbury,
Sheridan, Innes, Whitehall, Allott. The only casualty was Sheridan, who
took a slight knock to the knee and will probably be rested for Friday’s
night’s game at Rhyl.

Leigh
victory
The Latics have
had their first taste of pre-season action and managed to win 3-2 against
Leigh RMI last night. It may not have been the performance that Andy Ritchie
was looking for but at least it got the side off to the right start. The
Latics' goals came from Steve Whitehall, Mark Allott and skipper Lee Duxbury.
The opposition
though proved to be a tough nut to crack on the evening. Their side was
packed with players who have plenty of League experience and the Latics
were made to fight hard for the win. Ritchie commented: "It was a rusty
performance from us and could have been far better. However, it was a very
competitive match and that was what we needed. There was plenty of chances
created by both sides and the game could have finished 8-8! To be fair
they should have been 2-0 up before we scored but we kept plugging away
and deserved the result."
Teenage
trialist
The Latics are
giving a trial to a teenage centre back who played for Glentoran in Ireland
last season. The six-footer Hugh Dickson, who is 19, was recommended by
former Latics player Norman Kelly who is turning out for Linfield.

From
the Official Latics Web SiteThe
Manager turned out more or less a full strength team for the match at Hilton
Park, Latics going in front on 11 minutes - a headed goal from Lee Duxbury
following a cross from the right wing, a second attempt from Neil Adams.
It was two on 29 minutes when the former Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn
Rovers midfield Mark Patterson gave the ball away in the Leigh midfield
seized upon by Mark Allott whose first touch wasn't the best and he tried
to shoot the ball straight up into the air the Leigh defender but then
Allott scored a delightful volley from 18 yards with his right leg looping
it over keeper Craig Dootson. The Conference side got back on even terms
three minutes before half time when Dave Ridings shot from 18 yards sped
past Gary Kelly into the net and then a minute after the re-start after
a Tony Black shot had cannoned back off the cross bar Steve Jones was on
hand to score a tap in. The Latics were able to catch up with a match scoring
goal on 55 minutes with the ball being whipped in by left full back Andrew
Holt and then at the far post it was Steve Whitehall who pulled away into
space before directing a header into the roof of the Leigh net.
It was a decent
pre-season game with two former Latics players were participating in the
Leigh side, Iain Swan and Ian McLean and obviously Paul Jones who is the
reason why the game took place in the first instance.
MYSTERY
SURROUNDS RICHARD GRAHAM
Reports getting
back to the club this week suggest that Richard Graham, who had a week
on trial at Scunthorpe, went on trial at Third Division Carlisle and has
broken down in training and may have to retire from football.Obviously
everyone was disappointed to hear this devastating news which we hasten
to add has not yet been confirmed.
