ATHLETIC
are on the lookout for a new physio following the departure of Alex Moreno
to Huddersfield Town. They would welcome inquiries from any chartered physiotherapist
with experience in the treatment and management of sports injuries. Moreno
joined Athletic in 1995 from Preston and is moving primarily because Huddersfield’s
training ground is close to his home at Denby Dale.
IAIN
SWAN, the young defender who was transfer listed during Athletic’s clear-out
last season, has joined non-league Leigh RMI. Swan (20) had a loan spell
with Leigh earlier in the year and helped them to win the Unibond League
premier division title, earning promotion to the Conference.
He
later headed back to his native Scotland and was expected to sign for Partick
Thistle. But the move fell through and the strapping youngster, who made
his Athletic debut against Chelsea in the 1999 FA Cup third round, is now
back in the North West.
Due
to the number of centre-backs at Boundary Park, Swan was unable to cement
a regular place in the squad. He is making the opposite journey to Paul
Jones, who left Leigh in November and quickly established himself at Football
League level.

friendly details
Andy
Ritchie will watch his side in action tonight as the Latics make the short
trip to Leigh RMI for the first pre-season friendly. Ritchie is certainly
taking this one seriously as he decided to take all of his first team squad
to Leigh. It will also be a big occasion for Paul Jones who starred for
the Unibond League side early last season before being spotted by the Latics'
number two Billy Urmson. Jones was one of the big successes of the last
campaign and his eye catching displays saw him rewarded with an improved
two-year contract. It will also an important fixture for Neil Adams who
missed the final 14 games of last season with an old foot injury. The veteran
midfielder has been looking sharp in pre-season workouts and will seize
the change to show that he is now fully fit. There are similar opportunities
for Paul Rickers and Richard Dunning who will be looking to impress. Rickers
underwent a hernia operation back in April and is hoping to win back his
place whilst Dunning has been released by Blackburn and is looking for
a new club. Yet another injury victim for Ritchie to look at is Mark Allott
who was last season's top scorer with 11 goals.
Another
friendly lined up
The Latics have
another friendly against non-league opposition this week when they take
on Rhyl on Friday. The match in North Wales kicks off at 7.30 pm and once
against Andy Ritchie will turn out his first team squad. After that the
players pack their bags for the Isle of Man trip where they will take part
in the annual football festival which they won last year. They will be
looking to retain the trophy they picked up by beating the hosts, Watford
and Stockport. This year they will be pitting their wits against the Isle
of Man and Burnley.
Duo
arrive
Trialists Nganduana
Damas Buene and Wael Nazha, who are internationals from Zimbabwe and Lebanon
respectively, have now arrived at Boundary Park. The Latics are hoping
to take a long look at the pair with the view to offering them terms should
they impress Andy Ritchie. However, the club will be mindful of the fact
that they could face problems in obtaining a work permit for either of
them if they do decide they want to take them on a permanent basis.
