Internationals
on trial at Athletic
ATHLETIC
are spreading their net wider than ever as they search for a new striker
before the start of next season. Two
more players are due at Boundary Park this week — one a Lebanese international
and the other a leading name in Zimbabwe. The man from the Middle East
is Wael Nazha, a 26-year-old centre-forward who has recently played for
top Swiss club Lugano. A globe-trotting
career has also brought spells in Cyprus and Greece, but he is now hoping
for a move to England. Athletic consulted with former Lebanon coach Terry
Yorath, who is now at Sheffield Wednesday, before agreeing to take Nazha
on trial. Yorath confirmed that the player
was worth a look, so he will join in pre-season training before Andy Ritchie
takes his squad to the Isle of Man Football Festival over the weekend.
Joining
Nazha will be Zimbabwe international Ngnaduana Damas Bunene (25), whose
has built up his reputation in neighbouring South Africa. He plays for
Free State Stars and arrives from the same league which nurtured players
such as Lucas Radebe, of Leeds, and Manchester United's Quinton Fortune. Athletic
will not be pursuing their interest in French striker Robert Onskoko, who
was at Boundary Park last week. A pre-season
meeting for Athletic's matchday stewards will be held at the Clayton Arms
on Wednesday, July 26 (7.15pm). All stewards are asked to attend.

Ritchie interview We
are approaching the start of the pre-season, so now is the time to start
thinking about questions that you would like to put to Latics manager Andy
Ritchie in our interview./ The format will be the same as the recent David
Brierley interview. Send in your questions and I will pick out the best.
If there is enough I would like to put it to a vote. The only restriction
is the club have asked for "not so many" this time. Get your thinking caps
on and send them to me (separate from any other matters with a subject
line "stitch question") over the next 10 days or so. Predictions I
think it would be interesting for you to send in your predictions for next
season for the following.Premier

Oldham
| Pre-season
friendly - preview |
| The Latics will
make the trip to non-league Leigh RMI for tonight's pre-season friendly.
The game will give Andy Ritchie the opportunity to look at his current
players and how far they are from full match fitness. The clash will also
give the club a welcome outing ahead of the Isle of Man Football Festival
which takes place at the end of the month. The game is scheduled for a
7.30 pm kick-off and TEAMtalk will update you with the scores and scorers
as soon as we receive them |
| Strike
duo set for arrival |
| Oldham will
this week welcome two new additions to the squad, strike duo Damas Bunene
and Wael Nazha. Both trialists will be hoping to make a lasting impression
on the Latics management. The 26-year-old Bunene is a Zimbabwe international
who has been playing in South Africa with Free State Stars, while Nazha,
also 26, hails from the Lebanon. He has been playing in Switzerland for
Lugano and was once on the books of Italian giants Inter Milan. |
| No
deal for Onskoko |
| Andy Ritchie
has confirmed that the club will not be offering trialist Robert Mpoyi
Onskoko an extended stay at Boundary Park. The 19-year-old Frenchman spent
last week training with the rest of the squad, but Ritchie has informed
the player he won't be following up his interest. |
| Ritchie
calls for consistency |
| Andy Ritchie
will hammer a one-word message to his players as they prepare for the coming
campaign - consistency. That, he believes, will be the key to the club
launching a successful promotion bid. He explained: "You have to be capable
of turning in good performances week after week to get something at the
end of the season. "Consistency is going to be a vital ingredient." Ritchie
also believes his young guns will be better prepared for the battle ahead,
having been through the ups and downs of last season. He has a much smaller
squad - 25 down from 36 - but feels the quality is there with a good blend
of youth and experience. He added: "We are on an upward spiral and we have
to keep that going." |
