LATICS GAME UNDER THREAT

INTERNATIONAL calls are threatening Athletic’s already rearranged home game against Wigan on Tuesday. The match may be postponed again if Wigan striker Simon Haworth is called up by Wales for next week’s friendly in Qatar. Wigan have already lost goalkeeper Roy Carroll and central defender Pat McGibbon who are in the Northern Ireland squad for their friendly against Luxembourg. If Haworth, who has been placed on stand-by, is needed by Wales, Wigan can seek a postponement because three of their players are away. “It is going to be a case of waiting to see if any of the Welsh strikers are injured on Saturday,” explained Athletic chief-executive Alan Hardy. He added that it is a far from ideal situation not knowing whether the game will go ahead.

Andy Ritchie is having no luck in his search for a new striker. One of the Athletic manager’s main targets has been injured. Ritchie, who has lost Mark Allott through injury and Matthew Tipton because of a four-match ban, says it is unlikely that a loan striker will be brought in until next week. That will leave Athletic with a depleted forward line in Saturday’s league match at Wrexham. Ritchie will also have to make a defensive change as Scott McNiven joins Tipton on the banned list. McNiven, who must serve a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards, will be replaced by either Richard Graham or Paul Jones. Graham has played the last two matches in midfield in place of John Sheridan who has a neck injury. Though an X-ray has revealed no bone damage, Sheridan is still complaining of soreness so he must remain a worry. Athletic reserves’ home match against Manchester City tonight in the Manchester Senior Cup has been postponed as the Boundary Park pitch is unfit.

Sheridan neck injury

A specialist's report has revealed that John Sheridan's neck injury is not as serious as was first feared. The influential midfiedler has missed the last two games but could return for Saturday's visit to Wrexham. He went for medical checks when the injury didn't respond to treatment as quickly as expected.
However, X-rays showed that there was no bone damage and that the problem was muscular and should clear up fairly quickly with rest and relaxation. The Latics have lost both games whilst Sheridan has been unavailable and Andy Ritchie has said: "Obviously, you are always going to miss a player of John's quality. You can function to a certain level, but we could have done with his control in the second half of the game against Gillingham last week."
The boss went onto confirm that there is no visible bruising or welling in the area that is causing the problem and it is now just a case of waiting and seeing how he progresses over the remainder of the week. He said: "It would be great to have him back for the Wrexham match but at the moment it is looking doubtful. We have to try and make sure that he will last for the full 90 minutes and I'm sure he'll tell us if he's not ready."

Miskelly plans shelved

Plans to send reserve team keeper David Miskelly out on loan, have been put on hold for the time being. With Gary Kelly recently signing a new two year deal Miskelly's hopes of breaking into the senior side have been dashed and Andy Ritchie wanted the Northern Irish international to get some experience with a league side. However, youth keeper Jamie Campbell, who would have stood in for him, will be out for several weeks after breaking a finger and so Miskelly will have to bide his time before going out on loan.

ROBINS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

Wrexham manager Brian Flynn has a number of key players back in contention for Nationwide League action against Oldham. Danny Williams (leg), Steve Roberts (foot) and Deryn Brace all played in Wednesday's 8-0 FAW Premier Cup win over Merthyr. And Andy Morrell, who scored an amazing seven goals in that game, is in contention for a place. Darren Ferguson (flu) and Kevin Russell (knee) are both expected to be fit, but Phil Hardy is suspended. Flynn said: "Oldham are on a good run but they had a little slip on Saturday. I'm sure they'll want to make amends for that." Oldham Athletic could have John Sheridan back in action for the trip to the Racecourse Ground. Sheridan may feature in the game if he is deemed fit enough to make the trip, but the Latics will be without the suspended pair of Scott McNiven and Matthew Tipton. Manager Andy Ritchie said: "We need to get back to winning ways after a couple of bad results. "It's going to be difficult because we both need the points and we'll be hoping to keep them below us."
