Pointon
expecting great cup clash
Former Latics
favourite Neil Pointon is predicting a cracking FA Cup first round tie
at Hednesford on Saturday. He is player-coach with the Conference outfit
and can't wait to try to outwit former team-mate Andy Ritchie. Pointon
said: "Andy likes sides with attacking flair and that is our strong point.
"We don't sit back and soak up pressure because we like to get forward
as often as possible." Hednesford are third from bottom in the Conference
with the worst defensive record in the division. They have conceded 40
goals in 18 games - but they have scored 29 and only the top three clubs
can better that.
The side is
made up of sales reps, decorators, university students, ex-league players
and a Soccer agent, while the manager is an accountant. Pointon insisted:
"I can say now that this game won't be 0-0 and the fans are going to love
it. "Of course we will be going into the contest believing we can win it,
otherwise what's the point? "We will be giving it all we have got and it
will all depend on which side wants it most. "It will be done and dusted
on the day and I don't think they will be taking us back to Boundary Park."
Pointon, who made 95 appearances and scored seven goals for the Latics,
admits it will be a day of mixed emotions for him. He added: "I loved my
time at Boundary Park and whatever the result I will have a drink with
Andy and wish him, the club and the fans all the best and hope they can
go on to win promotion."
Another
win for reserves
The Latics
reserves chalked up another victory with a 2-1 win against Burnley at Turf
Moor. The win sees the Oldham second string keep pace with the leaders
in the Avon Insurance Premier League. The victory was enough to keep them
in the top four, just four points behind top-of-the-table Tranmere. The
game was the reserves first outing in almost three weeks and four players
making their comebacks from injury -- John Sheridan, Barry Prenderville,
Mark Hotte and Andy Holt -- all came through without mishap. For the record,
Matthew Tipton and Ryan Sugden were the goal scorers. Teamtalk

Youth
discussions
Leeds' plan
to invest in youth policies at smaller clubs, like Oldham, comes under
the spotlight today as club chairman meet in London. The current rules
have prevented Leeds investing money into Oldham's youth set up so they
can then take the pick of the crop of youngsters on the other side of the
Pennines as well as this side. The current rules only allow clubs to take
young players from a 40 miles radius but Leeds are looking to get that
changed so they can set up associations with Oldham and Carlisle and the
like. It gives you a clue about how long it takes to change anything football
wise when you remember that Leeds first tried to change the rules back
at the end of last season and here we are approaching Christmas and still
nothing has happened.

Canada
Denied by the Woodwork
Toronto, Ontario
- Canada's Men's World Cup Team finished their World Cup Qualifying campaign
with a spirited 0-0 draw against Mexico at Varsity Stadium in Toronto,
Wednesday. Despite being already eliminated from the World Cup, the Canadians
put on a good show for the 6564 fans who braved near zero temperatures.
The woodwork
proved to be Mexico’s saving grace as the Canadians struck the crossbar
and the post twice within seconds. In the dying minutes in the first half,
Garret Kusch put Daniel Imhof through and the Canadian midfielder struck
the inside of the post, the deflection rebounded to Carlo Corazzin who
saw his effort come off the opposite post. Only minutes earlier, Corazzin
came close to opening the scoring in the 43rd minute when his header off
a free kick struck the crossbar and deflected out of harms way.
The Canadians
dominated the first half, winning six corners to Mexico’s none while outshooting
their opponents 2-0. It was a spirited effort by the home team which enjoyed
superior ball possession and continually pressured the Mexican defence.
The temperature
at kick-off was a chilly 3 degrees with most players donning gloves and
long-sleeve shirts in an effort to stay warm. The temperature did not hinder
Canada as they out shot Mexico five to two. The Canadians created several
scoring opportunities via their nine corner kicks and during the run of
play.
In the second
half, Mexico had their first real chance of the game in the 55th minute
when Claudio Suarez got his head to a cross and floated a header which
was destined for the top corner but goalkeeper Pat Onstad made a fantastic
diving stop to keep the game scoreless. Minutes later, Onstad made a quick
reflex save off a Francisco Palencia header.
In the 60th minute,
Jim Brennan intercepted an attempted clearance and hit a fierce left-footed
shot which Jorge Campos managed to parry.
Canada will likely
play their next game in the spring in preparation for the Confederation
Cup in June.

MATCH
POSTPONED

to a waterlogged pitch. The match is being re-arranged to take place at
Boundary Park on Saturday morning the 18th November at 11 am.
MIXED
NEWS FOR NEIL
Neil Adams has
received mixed news after seeing a specialist today. The specialists verdict
is that there is some ligament damage in the right knee which is not as
bad as first thought. The specialist will review the injury again in six
weeks during which time Neil will undergo intensive physiotherapy under
the excellent guidance of Phil Stock. It means that Neil will be out of
action for at least two months but is hopeful of a return to action fairly
early in the New Year.
RESERVES
VICTORY
Latics Reserves
recorded an excellent 2-1 victory at Burnley last night. Latics went 2-0
up in the first 25 minutes after totally dominating play. The first goal
came from Matthew Tipton who lobbed the keeper after poor work by Burnley's
centre half Gordon Armstrong. Latics' second goal came after an excellent
passing movement that ended with Barry Prenderville playing in Ryan Sugden
whose left foot shot into the far corner left the Burnley keeper with no
chance. After the first 25 minutes Burnley came into the game and Latics
lost their way a little. In the second half it was a different story as
Andy Holt had a torrid time against winger Maylett. Burnley substitute
Anthony Shandran pulled a goal back from a far post header. Latics then
had to hang and on and defend stoutly to secure the win. John Sheridan
played for 80 minutes, Holt played the full 90 minutes and Paul Jones and
Mark Hotte played 45 minutes each.

Shandran
goal not enough
HIGHLY rated teenage
striker Anthony Shandran celebrated his new contract at Turf Moor with
another goal in the Avon Insurance League last night. But his second-half
strike wasn't enough to prevent a strong Burnley side from slipping to
their third defeat of the season. And to make matters worse for the Clarets,
striker Andy Cooke collected a fifth booking of the campaign to land a
one-match ban. Boss Stan Ternent gave on-loan forward Paul Robinson his
first start in a Burnley shirt and also gave Cooke, John Mullin and Ronnie
Jepson, who are likely to be on the bench at Birmingham City on Saturday,
a run-out. But Burnley, who are third in the table, quickly went 2-0 down
to two early goals.
Matthew Tipton
put the Latics ahead when he latched onto a short back-header from Gordon
Armstrong and Ryan Sugden then doubled the visitors' lead with a smart
shot on the turn. Cooke then looked to be upended in the box but instead
of winning a penalty it was the Clarets man who went into the referee's
book. Things improved after the break for Burnley when Shandran came off
the bench and showed his eye for goal when heading home a Brad Maylett
cross to pull one back within five minutes of the re-start. And the Clarets
then dominated the game as they looked for an equaliser. But despite a
number of close calls, solid goalkeeping by David Miskelly kept the home
side at bay.
Burnley: Paxton,
West, Devenney, Brass, Armstrong, Heywood, Maylett, Jepson (Kevan 46),
Cooke (Shandran 46), Robinson, Mullin (Williamson 46).
