Cold
shoulder for listed Latics trio
THE
three players put on free transfers by Athletic are facing life as Boundary
Park outcasts. David McNiven, Iain Swan and Ian McLean have all been frozen
out of tonight's reserve-team game as manager Andy Ritchie looks to the
players of the future. Halifax have dropped their interest in striker McNiven,
while no club has made a move for Scottish defender Swan, who was transfer
listed last month.
Neither
have there been any enquiries for McLean, although the full-back was only
made available a few days ago. Ritchie said: "If someone comes on the 'phone
wanting to watch one of those players, I will do my best to get them in
the side. "But the lads who are playing tonight are the ones I want to
see pushing for the first team. "We have to give the young lads a chance
and these are the people I'm hoping are the future of the club." The absence
of McNiven, Swan and McLean presents a window of opportunity for three
more of Athletic's first-year professionals.
The
likes of Glen Roberts, who is set to start tonight's game, Gareth Gardiner,
Nathan Wharton and Gerry McLaughlin have previously had their paths from
the youth team blocked. The Pontins League match against Birmingham, which
is being played at Hednesford Town, also marks the return of defender Jordan
Tait after a seven-week absence following a hernia operation. Craig Dudley,
who came back as a substitute at Preston on Saturday, continues his recovery
from a thigh problem by playing out wide. A good performance by Paul Beavers,
meanwhile, could see the striker force his way into the squad for this
weekend's match at Cambridge. Reserves: Miskelly, Tait, Jones, Futcher,
Roberts, Dudley, Boshell, Walsh, Innes, Beavers, Tipton. Subs: Campbell,
Sugden, Gardiner, Wharton, McLaughlin. Cambridge had to postpone their
Auto Windscreens Shield fixture last night due to a waterlogged pitch.
Secretary Andy Pincher said this morning: "We also had frost overnight
but, once we've done some work, I'm hopeful everything will be okay for
Saturday."

Weekend comeback
for Beavers ?
Paul Beavers looks set to make his long-awaited
comeback. The big striker has not featured for more than three months and
looked to have suffered yet another setback when he limped out of a reserve
team game at Rochdale last week. But the groin problem he picked up has
proved to be a minor one and Beavers has now set his sights on Saturday's
match at struggling Cambridge. Beavers performed heroics last season as
his two goals whilst on loan at Boundary Park helped the Latics beat the
threat of relegation. This season has been a frustrating one so far for
the striker though as an Achilles injury has seen him have to endure a
spell on the sidelines. His overall fitness is now improving, and although
he is not 100 per cent match sharp, he gives the Latics a target man, and
his style of play could see him named in the Latics' squad on Saturday.
Andy Ritchie said: "Paul was close to being involved at Preston last Saturday,
but I left him out of my plans when he had to quit the reserve team game.
"It turned out his problem wasn't as bad as we first thought, so he will
be back in contention for the trip to Cambridge." Teamtalk

Loan deal done
!
North End have made another loan signing,
with Huddersfield forward David Beresford joining the club for a month. The
wide man has not got a look in the first team this season at the McAlpine,
after the arrival in the summer of George Donis and the likes of Ben Thornley
and Scott Sellars in their squad. The former Oldham man, who's known for
his lightening pace, is seen as a short term replacement for the injured
Lee Cartwright.
