Garnett's injury worry for Latics
ATHLETIC are still waiting to hear the verdict on Shaun Garnett's abdominal injury.

The rugged defender saw a specialist yesterday, but will now be sent for a precautionary scan. Garnett suffered a strain at Gillingham last week and played through the pain barrier during Saturday's victory over Bury. When he came off after an hour, Athletic knew they had to check out the problem fully before allowing him to continue playing.

The 29-year-old could well need an injection to turn out in the weekend match at high-flying Bristol Rovers. Because he has previously had surgery in the affected area, doctors are reluctant to take any action before a scan has revealed his exact condition. If Garnett had to miss the trip to Bristol, Athletic would hope to call on Richard Graham or Stuart Thom as a defensive partner for in-form Scott McNiven. However, Graham is short of full fitness after his long-term knee problem, while Thom is yet to return from a broken toe.

Thom has played only once all season — the Worthington Cup tie at Stockport in which he suffered his injury — but is pencilled in for tomorrow's reserve-team game against Huddersfield. There was a major scare for trainee goalkeeper Tom Robinson at the weekend when he swallowed his tongue playing for the youth team at Bury. Robinson, on as a substitute for John Mohan, received a kick to the head and, after lengthy on-field treatment, was kept in hospital overnight for observation. Midfield player Nathan Wharton became Athletic's third 'keeper in a 1—0 defeat.

Garnett's crucial scan
Shaun Garnett goes to hospital on Tuesday for scan to diagnose his latest injury, thought to be a pulled or strained stomach muscle. The key defender is ready to play through the pain barrier with injections but he has had surgery in that area before and his specialist wants to take a proper look at him before deciding on which form of treatment to take. Ritchie claims: "He got the injury in the game at Gillingham and it has just got worse and worse. We won't know how bad it is until the surgeon delivers his medical report later in the week."

Thom's reserves return

Stuart Thom will make his return to action in the reserves on Wednesday, his first appearance since breaking his toe against Stockport. The influential defender will be given a taste of match action with a run out for the reserves at Boundary Park on Wednesday evening. The 23 year old has missed the last six games after breaking a toe in the Worthington Cup tie with Stockport. Thom will be given at least an hour's workout to ascertain whether the injury has healed properly.
If the player does come through without any adverse reaction he will be pencilled in for this Saturday's trip to high flying Bristol Rovers. If Thom comes through OK he will probably replace Richard Graham in the side this weekend. Graham is still some way from what can be described as match fit. Graham has been out since last December following surgery on his knee but was pitched into the thick of the action against Bury last Saturday. Andy Ritchie has since admitted: "He did OK and came through without any problems, but it all looked a bit quick for him. If Stuart is OK it will give Richard more time in the reserve until he looks a bit sharper."
