Whitehall
must wait in the wings
STEVE
WHITEHALL'S scoring heroics are unlikely to earn him a starting spot when
Athletic take on Colchester at Boundary Park on Sunday (2 pm) Whitehall
has earned the supersub tag recently thanks to his burst of three goals
in four games — all of them after coming off the bench.
He
hit the fourth against Chelmsford in the FA Cup, grabbed an injury-time
equaliser against Wycombe and, on Tuesday, produced a superb 88th-minute
finish to beat Millwall. Yet Whitehall's hottest scoring streak since he
joined Athletic is no guarantee of a recall to the frontline. Although
Mark Allott is without a goal in five games — and has been replaced by
Whitehall in the last three —manager Andy Ritchie will be reluctant to
change an in-form team. Ritchie said: "Steve has scored a couple of crucial
goals and there is a temptation to play him from the start. "But when a
side is winning and performing quite well, it's hard to let anybody go.
"Although Mark Allott isn't among the goals at the moment, he isn't playing
badly either. "Nothing has been finalised yet, but I can see the team being
very similar to the one which played on Tuesday." HAT-TRICK
Ritchie
has added 21-year-old midfield man Danny Walsh to the squad after seeing
him hit form for the reserves. Walsh made a brief appearance as substitute
against Burnley last season but has no other league experience. Victory
over rock-bottom Colchester could put Athletic closer to the play-off places
than the relegation zone.
They
have suffered one defeat in eight games and will be aiming for their first
hat-trick of league wins since back in April, 1995. ATHLETIC (probable):
Kelly, Adams, Holt, S McNiven, Hotte, Graham, Sheridan, Duxbury, Rickers,
Allott, Dudley. Subs (from): Miskelly, Futcher, Innes, Tipton, Whitehall,
Walsh. Steve Whitton's Colchester haven't won for over two months and,
with 34 goals conceded in 15 matches, have the worst defensive record in
the division. They are scoring goals, however, and are set to play with
a three-man attack, supported by former Tottenham midfield man Jason Dozzell.
COLCHESTER (probable): Brown, Richard, Keith, Greene, Skelton, Wilkins,
D Gregory, Dozzell, Duguid, McGavin, Lua Lua. Subs: Walker, Lock, Moralee,
Pinault, Farley. Latique and the ticket office will open an hour later
than usual on Sunday, at 10 am.

Former star
applies for post
Former Latics striker John McGinlay has
applied to become the player manager of Shrewsbury Town. The 34-year-old
had to quit Boundary Park because of an achilles injury, but he is back
in training and hoping to play in a couple of weeks. The former Scotland
international said, "The surgeon told me to rest for six months and Oldham
couldn't afford for me to sit out that long, but I am back in training
and I had a club sorted out before the Shrewsbury job came along."

to Carl Carl,I
was great to get a response from you and yes you are correct we have a
great deal of common ground between us, after 46 years of being dragged
back to BPI believe I have had my fair share of disappointment, false promises,
lost hope and sometimes total....YES... TOTAL DESPAIR.....but still keep
going back...I can still quite clearly remember when we almost went
bust, then someone with very strong connections with John Willies stepped
in and saved us, its a good job he did otherwise we would have no club
and nothing to bloody well moan about.Yes we do have a lot in common but
I have learned to channel my own energies into a more positive outlook,
please don't take that the wrong way, I am not suggesting anything, in
fact all I have asked for is for the fans to get back to BP and soon, otherwise
we may not have a club at all.Over the course of the next few days with
permission from Gary I hope to be able to present to you all a few simple
facts and figures, yes FACTS from within the club, on condition that you
don't ask how I get them, I promise however that that is exactly what they
will be.You will be able to interpret them however you want to do, but
simply rememberOAFC is more than just OUR FOOTBALL CLUB, it is also a limited
liability company and a business that has to be run as economically as
possible, I have also suggested to Mr Brierley in the letter I mentioned
the other night that this exercise could be carried out by the club with
more FACTS available to supporters,I don't know if it will be forthcoming,
but in this newly discovered stability?....well one never knows.I do know
from information received today that whatever was said on GMR the other
night(and though it is difficult to receive over here, had I known I would
have listened in myself) I would not normally make comment about hearsay,
but somehow whatever was said came across as more negativity, as I say
I have no opinion, other than perhaps its best to say nowt in future.
Before I embark on the first facts and
figures next week(awaiting permission from Gary first) I have to ask, would
you really invest a lottery jackpot in anything that you knew was going
to cost you £10,000 per week.....I know you are a fanatic I never
had you down as being that daft!......no offence intended of course.(Must
admit that I have my dreams as well) but would not admit that one to anybody,
not even my missus. Kindest
regards to you and all Latics fans across the world, sincere thanks to
Gary Davies, without his efforts and the Boundary Bullet-zine we would
have to talk to ourselves (no doubt that could eventually become a qualification
for becoming a board member)...... Take care and keep the views coming
in, better still get down to BP on Sunday 2 P.M. KICK OFF. and let
some steam off .... keep the faith!Best wishes.Jeff
