Ritchie looks at the new boy

ATHLETIC boss Andy Ritchie got his first close look at trialist Robert Mpoyi Onskoko today. The French striker is at Boundary Park for the rest of the week, hoping to impress officials and fulfil his own ambition of playing in England. “What I’ve seen of him, he’s quite quick, strong and with a good touch,” said Ritchie. “This part of pre-season is difficult for any trialist. We don’t have a game for another two weeks, so without seeing him in a game, it’s often hard to asses him. “I’ll take a good look at him for the remainder of the week and then make a decision.”

Onskoko, 19, scored 14 goals in 28 appearances for French division two side Creteil last season. He began his career at one of Europe’s most famous clubs, Paris St Germain, where he spent three years. Agent Phil Black says Onskoko is desperate to play in England. He would also not command a fee, because he is an amateur. On the transfer front, Ritchie has made contact with “one or two players”, but is refusing to give any clue to their identity. “We are currently in negotiations, but I wouldn’t want to say anything more in case we alert other clubs,” said Ritchie.

French trialist arrives

The Latics have taken on a French trialist by the name of Mpoyi Onskoko who scored 14 goals in 28 appearances for Creteil last season. The 19 year old made a big impression in the French Second Division last season having spent three years with Paris St. Germain before his time at Creteil. Alan Hardy said: "It costs us nothing to take a look at him and from what we have been told he could be a very useful player. "If you don't give a player a trial you will never know what you missed out on!" Onskoko, who has African ancestry, will not command a fee as he is an amateur. He is keen to try and make a career in England and joined in the pre-season training today. Andy Ritchie is also hoping to bring in some more trialists in the next week or so.

Boss spells out goal

Andy Ritchie has spelled out his main goal for the new season and that is to make the play-offs and gain promotion. The boss firmly believes that the Latics can do it with Ritchie explaining: "There us no doubt in my mind that we are good enough to reach the play-offs and we will certainly be going for it." However, he knows if the Latics want to have a realistic chance of getting up then they will have to make a better start than they made last season. The boss continued: "We can't afford to go down that road again and play catch up football. Our aim must be to get off to a flier and make our presence felt from the off. We must also improve on our home form. We can't afford to lose 10 games at our place like we did last season. It's been a problem for the last couple of seasons and we just have to get it right this time of asking."
Work experience joy

15 year old Craig Fleming is spending his work experience period at Boundary Park! The Stockport schoolboy is gaining a valuable insight by training with the first, second and third year youngsters, having bee brought in by the coaching staff who believe he has a bright future within the game. Fleming was the scoring star of the Latics U-16 side which recently went to Northern Ireland to take part in the Foyle Cup, scoring five goals in five games, including a hat-trick.
Leeds blast
Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has blasted the British football authorities for preventing Premiership clubs from buying British. He says there would be far more quality English players at Elland Road if it hadn't of been for the sort of bureaucracy that prevented the full blown link up with Oldham. Rules state that players can only be recruited by clubs if they live within a 90 minute radius. Leeds planned to get around that by taking a stake in Oldham, Carlisle and Peterborough and in return for their investment which would provide facilities and coaching Leeds would use the three clubs as 'feeder clubs' into their own set up. The Football League would not allow it and Ridsdale blasted: "It's time some people in football thought of the future of the game rather than the rule book."
