Subramani, Jita and Lim get our vote

ONE of my Timesport colleagues claims he knows who the winners at this evening's S-League Awards Night will be.

His source: the list of nominees sent out by the S-League.

His theory: Look at how the names are listed. The first name in each of the categories will be the winner.

Going by that theory, the Player of the Year will be S. Subramani. Ahmad Latiff Khamaruddin will be the Young Player of the Year, Jita Singh will be Coach of the Year and Geylang United will be the Best Fan Club.

An interesting theory, perhaps it will be proven correct.

Timesport has its own list of deserving officials, players and clubs.

For Player of the Year, we had two front-runners -- Tanjong Pagar's Subramani and Jurong FC's V. Sundramoorthy.

After much deliberation, the vote went to Subramani. Although Sundram was spectacular at times, Subramani was the more consistent of the two, earning high marks from all his coaches as well.

The Tanjong Pagar defender was also instrumental in the Jaguars winning both the Tiger Beer Singapore Cup and the Singapore Pools FA Cup.

For Young Player of the Year, we were even more divided initially but we finally agreed on another Jaguar, international rookie Lim Soon Seng.

The Tanjong Pagar full-back has worked hard to earn a first-choice spot in the league's best defence, earning a national call-up in the process.

The easiest task was to pick the Coach of the Year.

Unanimously, we voted for Sembawang Rangers' Jita Singh, who has restored pride to the northern club.

Perhaps riding on our conscience was the fact that we were one of the first to write off the Stallions at the start of the season, predicting that the team of unknowns would finish near or at the bottom of the table.

But Jita has made nonsense of that prediction, bringing his club to two Cup semi-finals and within a goal of winning the FA Cup.

For that reason, he is Timesport's Coach of the Year.

And finally, the Fan Club of The Year. The two that stood out were Tanjong Pagar and Home United.

It was close, but the Timesport vote went the way of the Jaguars, who perhaps had the edge in having a longer tie with the Tanjong Pagar grassroots organisations.

So, by our reckoning, it will be Subramani, Lim, Jita and Tanjong Pagar for the main titles tonight.

These winners, we feel, did not only do credit to their respective clubs but to the S-League itself, injecting a sense of professionalism to the infant organisation.
