Expect goals, goals and goals

High-scoring match in store when Warriors, Jaguars clash in Cup final

WHAT is certain when the S-League's top two teams clash in the Tiger Beer Singapore Cup final at the National Stadium tomorrow?

Goals. Yes, lots of them.

At least the statistics suggest so.

  • This season Tanjong Pagar United FC and Singapore Armed Forces FC accounted for a third of all the league's goals, scoring a total of 114 between them.

  • The Jaguars, with 58 goals, have the best offensive record this year while SAFFC is a close second.

  • In nine meetings between the two teams since the league started in 1996, there were no 0-0 draws.

  • The highest scoring game was in the 1996 Pioneer Series match at Queenstown Stadium where the home team lost 3-4 in a seven-goal thriller.

  • Their last meeting saw the Jaguars hammer their arch rival 5-1 in the Singapore Pools FA Cup semi-final last Saturday.

And if the words of the men who matter most, the coaches, are anything to go by, then the league's goal-machines are likely to continue producing the goods.

Said SAFFC's Vincent Subramaniam: "Fans can come expecting a goal feast because we want badly to win this final and the only way to do it is to score goals.

"We cannot deny that we have a reputation. But then we also had one last week when we're beaten 1-5. We are determined to make up for that."

Responding, Tanjong Pagar coach Tohari Paijan said that reputations and results of past matches counted for little in a Cup final.

But since a result is expected on the night, goals will be scored.

He added: "Our style of play has always been open and I do not see any reason to change that. I just hope that SAFFC also plays open football to make the match exciting for everyone. Then the goals will come."

Both coaches also singled out opposing strikers as the key to the final.

Said Vincent: "On current form Steven Tan and Nicodeme Boucher are probably the hottest strike force in Singapore. The only way is to limit the crosses to Boucher."

His midfield general, Velimir Crljen, may come back on time after receiving treatment to his groin in Croatia.

For Tohari, the pivot will be SAFFC skipper Fandi Ahmad, who is also the Warriors' leading scorer with 10 goals.

The Jaguars coach, who played alongside Fandi in the late 1970s, said: "Only one player can destroy Tanjong Pagar -- Fandi Ahmad.

"I've known him since he was 14 and I know what he can do."
