Spare $5 and bring back the roar on Saturday

By YAP KOON HONG

THAT'S RIGHT. For only $5 and keeping this Saturday night free, you can help bring back the Kallang roar.

That is the price of a ticket for this Saturday's S-League finale at the National Stadium in which fans will be treated to three matches: the Tiger Beer Singapore Cup's third-place match, the battle for the title and a VIP match which will help raise funds for the league.

It is not that there is no interest in Singapore soccer. If The Straits Times initiative is any indication, the response from the fan in the street has been surprising.

More than 1,000 readers have written, telephoned, faxed and e-mailed the S-League, "soccer minister" Mah Bow Tan and The Straits Times since Timesport began the "Support Our Soccer" appeal last month.

This Saturday is the time for all of us to put the words into action when Tanjong Pagar and the Singapore Armed Forces Football Club lock horns for the Tiger Beer Singapore Cup.

The ingredients for a no-holds-barred contest are already in place.

The Warriors were not only whipped, they were ripped apart last Saturday in the semi-final of the tournament organised by the Football Association of Singapore -- the FA Cup.

For a team like SAFFC to go out by its worst-ever losing scoreline ever, 5-1, revenge against the Jaguars must be uppermost in the Warriors' minds.

SAFFC has been synonymous with championship quality since professional club football started in Singapore.

It is the defending champion of the S-League...the Manchester United of Singapore.

But Tanjong Pagar has been on a roll and has always been SAFFC's jinx.

Fans will not want for goals or football quality.

So what is it keeping you back?

Perception, for one. Part of it is the league's doing. The regional concept is still fuzzy. Allegiances have not firmed and are not as easily won the way it is with the national team even if that team is part of a tournament of sub-national quality like the Malaysia Cup.

The league is also not up to the mark in marketing and organisation. More can be done to attract the fans but that is not the story we are interested in for Saturday.

The case before us is simple: Let us try to fill the National Stadium or because that is the best way to show our support for the most popular game in the country.

Parents, uncles, mothers or working brothers who complain that it is expensive to take the kids out for a game can have no reason not to for Saturday's S-League festival.

Your children can watch the game free if they answer a simple question.

Clubs can do more. Fans should be entertained and rewarded.

Seven other clubs which failed to make it to Saturday's two matches can organise a trip for their fans and hold their own cheering contests along the terraces.

The winning club could be rewarded with prizes.

You want more ideas? Watch this space.

But most of all, stand up for Singapore soccer. Keep your Saturday night free. Make the the trip to the National Stadium -- and help bring back the Singapore roar.
