A while later***
When Maria woke up, she rubbed her eyes and rolled groggily out of bed.
"Ow!" She had stepped one of the Monopoly pieces. It was the
horse. She thought, did I fall asleep while playing Monopoly? Did Elisa
leave? She put away the game, and looked at her watch. 4:13. She noticed
that her diary was missing, and quickly put a hand to her neck. Her key
was missing! She raced downstairs in panic. She grabbed her purse and ran
towards the door. Suddenly, Elisa popped out from the kitchen.
"Looking for this?", she sneered, holding up Maria's chain. "Elisa?
You took my key and diary?", asked Maria dumbfoundedly.
"Yes. You've written some very interesting things in your diary."
Oh, no, she's read my plans for getting Matthew away from her!, thought
Maria in alarm.
"Oh, yes, very interesting indeed.", remarked Elisa as if reading
her mind.
"I was just kidding, you know--I was high when I wrote that-- Please
don't take that seriously, Elisa--you know I'm your best friend!",
begged Maria, backing away.
"Kidding? About what, stealing Matthew away from me, that I was an
obnoxious twit, or that I was dumber than an ox?", screamed Elisa.
"All of them!"
"I wasn't born yesterday, you know!", spat Elisa.
"I-I didn't mean what I wrote. You've got to believe me!", stammered
Maria.
"No, of course you didn't. You're just innocent, sweet Maria.",
hissed Elisa, "And I'm just silly, dense Elisa. Isn't that right."
Maria turned around and ran towards the staircase.
"Not so fast!", said Elisa.
Maria turned around and saw that Elisa had a gun pointed at her.
"All I ever wanted was a friend who liked me for myself! I thought
you were that friend, but, you used me too! What did I ever do to you?
I trusted you, and all along you were plotting my downfall! Now you'll
pay the price!", cried Elisa. She cocked the hammer, took aim, and
Maria fainted.
