THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK

I did not know what to expect when I went to see this movie. Most of the swashbuckling, macho, cloak and sword movies do not appeal to me. I felt that this type of movie genre had been overused. How could it be done fresh? I was surprised how human the story was and I did enjoy it.

This movie could have been titled grumpy old musketeers. The performances of Gabriel Bryne as D'Artagnan, Jeremy Irons as Aramis, John Malkovich as Athos and Gerard Depardieu as Porthos were fantastic. I especially enjoyed Depardieus' portrayal of the aging Porthos. He states that he is tired of being old and wants to end it all. He eventually comes to accept his aging with the help of his fellow musketeers in some hilarious scenes.

Leonardo DiCaprio played his dual roles very well. One, the nasty King Louis XIV and the other his twin brother who was exiled and placed in an iron mask. Leonardo always makes his characters come to life so easily and did the job two-fold in this movie.

This was an excellent movie and exceeded my expectations. My rating is an "A" or 8.4.
