"March!!"
Sixteen year old Todd Bowden was a good student, just too good for his own good. When he started his lesson in evil, he would learn it all too well. Todd, played by the super talented Brad Renfro, is studying the holocast and is in the library looking through the images of horror in the textbooks. The faces of the murderers and their victims stick in his mind. One face he sees looks all too familiar to him and belongs to someone he has seen right in his town. His quest for the ultimate knowledge about the holocast leads him to the door of who Todd knows is Kurt Dussander a nazi war criminal who now goes by the alias of Arthur Denker. Todd has prepared for his meeting with Dussander by taking fingerprints and stashing the evidence just in case. Dussander, played dead on by Ian McKellen, once he realizes what the boy knows agrees to slowly allow him into his evil mind and eventually his evil soul. Todd indeed becomes an apt pupil in evil.
Apt Pupil has no nice lead characters and no happy ending. It is not pleasant to watch unfold, but neither is the subject matter. The movie does a fine job showing how evil can penetrate the soul. In ultimate knowledge there comes a hefty price. A price poor young Todd pays in full.
An awesome movie!!
My rating A or 9.5
