In an age where many athletes reach new lows, Philippoussis is like a breath of fresh air.

Next month Philippoussis will stop in Sarasota to make an appearance to help benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation. He's not doing it for the publicity. And it's not being done for any trade off.

He's not seeking money. In fact, he's not even letting anyone foot the bill for his travel from the east coast of Florida.

He is driving to Sarasota, where he will join Sarasota's Jimmy Arias at an appearance to kick off the 10th year of the Make-A-Wish foundation auction and tennis tournament and to help raise money for the foundation.

Sarasota Advisory Council Chairman Barb Lancer says the only thing Philippoussis asked was that he have time "to spend with our Wish Children." Lancer, who has been one of the instrumental people helping raise more than $1 million dollars through the Make-A-Wish tennis tournament and auction over the past 10 years, points out that there are a number of athletes willing to make an appearance ... for a fee.

Two years ago Philippoussis, then living in Sarasota, played in an clinic and hit tennis balls with sponsors to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation. He even took off his shoes, signed them, and donated them to be auctioned off that evening.

Last year, a conflict in his schedule prevented the 6-foot-4 Australian from attending. Lancer said he apologized and was generous monetarily. This year he fit it in his schedule to be in Sarasota on April 25. Lancer said the event will most likely be held at the Sarasota Bath and Racquet Club.

Philippoussis, who at one time held the mark for the fastest serve during a match on the professional tour, trained for a time at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy. He owned a home on Longboat Key before moving to Miami two years ago.

Now 24, Philippoussis has won one tournament this year (Memphis) and is currently ranked No. 29 in the ATP Champions Race.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children who are suffering with life-threatening illnesses. The tournament and auction began 10 years ago at Longwood Run and has been at the Bath and Racquet for the past eight years. Last year more than $200,000 was raised at the "Win for a Wish auction and tennis tournament. This year the goal is to raise $250,000.

For years Arias, who has supported many activities in the area, has donated his time to help raise money. Two years ago Philippoussis joined in.

The auction will be held May 4 at the Phillippi Mansion. The tournament, which has grown into the largest charity tennis tournament in the area, will be held May 5-6 at the Bath and Racquet.
