MARK Philippoussis looks like being a no-show in Australia's Davis Cup quarter-final next month.

Even if he is named in the squad this afternoon, the Scud is unlikely to take on Brazil, and its world champion Gustavo Kuerten, on April 6-8.

"I've got to be selfish. I've got to look after myself," said Philippoussis after his shock first-round exit from the Masters Series tournament in Indian Wells, California, this week.

"My No. 1 priority is myself and my body. That's the only thing I'm looking at.

"If that means missing out on Davis Cup, that means missing out on Davis Cup."

Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald will announce the squad for the tie in Florianopolis today.

Hoping to include Philippoussis in the line-up, Fitzgerald planned to meet Australia's No. 3 player this week.

Yet according to Philippoussis's manager, Rob Aivatoglou, Tuesday's loss to American teenager Mardy Fish had thrown a spanner in the works.

“Mark was meant to speak with Fitzy after the match," Aivatoglou said. "But with him losing . . . it was obviously not the best time to discuss it. At this stage we have got no idea either way."

PAT Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt were untroubled yesterday in reaching the third round in Indian Wells yesterday.

Rafter, the 11th seed, defeated French qualifier Arnaud di Pasquale 6-2 6-2.

Hewitt, seeded sixth, waltzed past another qualifier, Paradorn Srichaphan, of Thailand, 6-3 6-3.
